The Whispering Banyan Tree
In a quiet village in Bengal, there was an old, abandoned mansion near a giant banyan tree. The villagers believed that the tree was haunted, and no one dared to go near it after sunset.
Many years ago, the mansion belonged to a zamindar who mysteriously disappeared one stormy night. Since then, people heard strange whispers coming from the tree. Some said it was the voice of the zamindar, calling out for help. Others believed it was the spirit of a woman who died waiting for him.
A young man by the name of Rajib, who didn't believe in ghosts, decided to show everyone wrong one evening. He took a lantern and went to the banyan tree at midnight. The air was heavy and cold, though there was no wind.
As Rajib stood under the tree, he suddenly heard soft whispers behind him.
"Leave... now..." the voice said.
He turned around, but no one was there. The lantern flickered and went out. He was enveloped in more and more darkness. Then he saw eyes—glowing red—from the branches above.
Terrified, Rajib ran back to the village. The next morning, people found him unconscious at the edge of the tree's shadow. When he woke up, his hair had turned white, and he refused to speak ever again.
From that day on, no one ever went near the banyan tree.
