The flagship drifts in silence, its systems slowly returning to life.

The warriors rest in shifts, the kittens nap in their seats, and the ship feels almost peaceful.

When Cheetara and Lion‑O finally emerge, a new responsibility awaits her — one that will shape the fragile family forming in exile.

THE QUIET MORNING

Book 1 – Exile and Vigil – Chapter 4, Episode 10

---

The Flagship Breathes Softly

The flagship floated through the void in steady silence.

Power, gravity, and airflow had been restored the night before, and though navigation and weapons remained offline, the ship felt alive again — breathing softly, humming gently, like a creature recovering from a wound. The heartline pulsed in slow, even rhythms, and Thunderan sensory fur across the ship settled instinctively in response.

The “morning” — a word borrowed from a world they no longer had — unfolded slowly.

---

The Warriors’ Quiet Routine

Panthro, Tygra, and Jaga had risen earlier, each moving with the sluggishness of those who had slept without resting. Their ears angled low, betraying the fatigue their faces tried to hide.

They ate their breakfast in silence:

Panthro — eggs, bacon, biscuits, and gravy

Tygra — Happy Feline’s Frosted Flakes with almonds and berries

Jaga — oatmeal with pumpkin bread and apples

Tygra drank orange juice with his cereal, then quietly poured himself a cup of Catty Kat’s Thunderan Coffee, joining the others in their morning ritual. The warm scents eased the tension in their sensory fur, coaxing their ears into a more neutral posture.

After eating:

Panthro made a second round through the ship, ears flicking toward every faint creak and hum as he re‑checked bulkheads and conduits now that gravity and airflow were stable.

Tygra returned to the systems station, tail swaying in small, controlled arcs — the Thunderan sign of deep concentration — as he continued the slow, meticulous restoration of the ship’s internal architecture.

Jaga sat at his console, ears steady and forward, reading through emergency procedures and the ship’s manifest as he prepared assignments for the day.

But exhaustion still clung to them.

So they took turns napping.

By the time the ship’s lights dimmed into their “late morning” cycle:

Panthro was asleep in his station seat, snoring softly

Snarf was curled in the communications chair, tail twitching in dreams

The kittens were napping in the passenger row, curled together like small wildcats

Tygra was awake again, working quietly

Jaga was reading, though his eyes were heavy

The bridge felt peaceful — a rare gift after everything they had endured.

---

A Gentle Return

Cheetara and Lion‑O finally stirred from their chamber.

They walked together to the communal washroom, ears lifting sluggishly — Thunderans waking slowly after emotional exhaustion. They used the facilities, washed their faces with warm water, brushed their teeth with Tiny Teeth Toothpaste, and smoothed their hair with Fluffy Fur Spray — a Thunderan brand name that had survived the fall of their world.

Lion‑O looked small and sleepy, his ears drooping in the youngling “morning softness” posture.

Cheetara looked composed, though her ears flicked inward with every anxious thought.

Did Snarf tell them?

Will they judge me?

Will they think I’m weak?

She pushed the thoughts aside.

They stopped by the galley next.

Cheetara selected:

  • a pouch of eggs, bacon, biscuits, and gravy
  • a cup of Catty Kat’s Thunderan Coffee

Lion‑O chose:

  • the same breakfast pouch
  • a cup of orange juice
  • a small carton of milk

Then they made their way to the bridge.

Lion‑O didn’t hold her hand; he simply stayed close, ears angled toward her — the Thunderan youngling sign of trust and orientation.

---

Arrival on the Bridge

The door slid open with a soft hiss.

Cheetara stepped in, her chest tightening with anxiety, her ears folding inward in a small, involuntary reflex of self‑consciousness.

Jaga looked up from the datapad he’d been reading — a mix of emergency procedures and the ship’s manifest.

Tygra glanced over his shoulder from the systems station.

Panthro snored softly in his chair.

Snarf twitched in his sleep.

The kittens dozed in their seats.

No one stared.

No one whispered.

No one judged.

Their ears remained neutral — a Thunderan sign of acceptance.

Cheetara breathed out, relieved.

Lion‑O drifted toward the kittens, and Cheetara followed, sitting beside them.

The children stirred awake, ears lifting as they scented her presence, then smiled sleepily.

They all began eating together — a small, warm cluster of young faces and one young woman, sharing breakfast in the soft hum of the bridge.

Cheetara felt her shoulders relax.

---

Jaga’s Assignment

When she finished eating, she rose and approached Jaga.

“Sir… reporting for duty,” she said, ears angled forward in disciplined readiness.

Jaga turned, studying her with calm, unreadable eyes.

“I have a task for you,” he said, handing her a datapad.

She accepted it, glancing at the screen.

“An inventory list?”

“Yes,” Jaga said. “The flagship already has a full manifest, but I want you and the children to verify everything physically. Make sure nothing was damaged or lost during the shockwave.”

Cheetara blinked.

“You want me to take the children?”

Her ears flicked upward — surprise mixed with a quiet spark of pride.

Jaga nodded.

“I told you yesterday that the children are your team now,” he said gently. “This is a good opportunity to lead them. It will take most of the day. Have lunch whenever you need to. Join us for dinner. If I need you, I’ll send Snarf.”

That last part made her ears twitch — Thunderan instinct reacting to emotional complexity: relief, gratitude, and lingering tension with Snarf.

She looked down at the list again.

“Sir… is this accurate? There are… vehicles onboard?”

Jaga’s smile was faint but real.

“This is the royal flagship, Cheetara. Of course there are.”

She exhaled, half amused, half overwhelmed.

“Understood.”

She returned to the children, datapad in hand.

“Alright,” she said softly. “You three are with me today.”

The kittens perked up immediately, ears shooting forward in excitement — Thunderan younglings love being given a “mission.”

Lion‑O stood at her side without hesitation, his tail giving a tiny, hopeful flick.

And for the first time that morning, Cheetara felt something warm bloom in her chest.

I get to spend the day with them…

I actually want that.

She was still annoyed with Snarf — and relieved he wasn’t coming. His sharp “You! Why is he with you?” still echoed in her mind.

This was their day.

She straightened, ears lifting high — the Thunderan posture of a warrior stepping into leadership — and smiled at the children.

“Let’s go.”

The kittens hopped off their seats.

Lion‑O followed her closely.

And together, they stepped into the corridor, heading toward the lower decks.

The quiet morning had ended.

A new chapter — their chapter — was beginning.

Ceremonial Closing Seal

Thus the morning passed in quiet rest,

and the maiden received her charge.

In exile, new bonds form not by decree,

but by the gentle choosing of hearts.
