The Old Barn

Darien

“Where is she?” He slammed his hands down looking at Jase.

With a mouthful of sandwich, “She’s with Kristen. You know I hate that Chick. I didn’t go with her.”

Darien pinched the bridge of his nose. “So clever.” He whispered.

“What?” Asked Jase.

“She said that so you wouldn’t go with her.” Darien looked at Jase who stopped chewing.

“Crap!” Jase dropped his sandwich, “Where is she?”

Darien pulls out his cellphone and opens a tracking app. “Heading to Shawns.”

Jase jumps out of his chair. “What do we do? That’s fifty minutes away from here!”

Darien calmly calls the guys, although he looks poised his chest raises in shallow breathes. His phone rings on speaker.

Several deep voices answer.

“Yo.”

“Sup.”

“Aye.”

“Yeah.”

“How fast can you get to Shawn’s shop?” Darien asked.

Silence.

“What happened?” One of them braved to ask.

“She found out and now she’s,” he looks at the tracker app, “fifteen minutes away from his shop!”

Tires screeching in the background.

“We’re on it!”

Dairen hangs up and presses the edge of the phone to his forehead and exhales. Why did I tell her?

“I’m really sorry, man.” Darien slowly looks up at Jase, Stares at him for a long second.

“It’s my fault. Just like everything else is.” Darien says shaking his head, “She’s just like me. I should’ve known better. But she’s so persuasive!” He slams his hand down on the table. “Now all we can do is wait and pray they stop her before she gets there.”

Darien sits back staring at the tracker app with one leg shaking. Jase begins stuffing his face. Darien shoots him a questioning look.

“I stress eat.” Jase shrugs.

Fifteen minutes later, the tracker app shows her pulling into Shawn’s parking lot. “They’re too late.”

I need answers. I grip the steering wheel, focusing on the road. How could he betray me? We were together for five years and now he just… Tears rolled down my face. Stop! I look in the rearview mirror and yelled at myself. Don’t cry Drey, don’t.

My stomach flipped seeing the light blue sign of Shawn’s shop. I pulled into the parking lot already feeling eyes on me even though I saw no one there. I took a deep breath in, pumped the door handle, and got out of the car. I slammed my door causing myself to jump and dropping my keys in the process. I cursed and reached down to pick them up. Okay, You got this.

I stood back up and took a deep breath- Someone grabbed my waist and covered my mouth before I could scream. My hands jutted out trying to grasp the air, my keys flew out of my hands, and I grabbed onto my assaulters arm struggling to break away.

“Drey. Stop it!” He whispered. Leo?

“Get her in the car.” A deep voice ordered. I turned my neck. Mason. Oh no! I went completely still as he walked slowly over to me. His nostrils flared as he approached me. My heart pounded in my chest. He kept eye contact with me until Leo slowly turned me away and walked me to SUV. I looked up seeing Tony in the driver’s seat. Ugh!

Leo opened the door and sat in the backseat with me. Tony hit the gas causing my heartrate to accelerate. All I could think of was the way Mason looked at me. Wait, “We left Mason.” Neither of them made a sound. They were mad. No, they were pissed.

We drove back home to our massive Bruce Wayne estate. It was modern, cold and tech-savvy. There was no color present in that house aside from me. I loved it.

Tony raced to open the door and Leo kept both hands on my shoulder as if I would bolt. I walked into the jet-black foyer, passed the white room, into the black granite kitchen. There sitting at our floating glass table was Jase and … Darien. Tony and Leo took their usual seats and I stayed standing waiting for my judgment.

Darien

Don’t yell at her. She’s safe. That’s all that matters.

I look down at where she stands.

I want to slap her! Take a deep breath.

“Explain.” I said from my core, so she knew not to mess with me.

She trembled. “I-I wanted to know why…”

“I told you why.” I held her stare her big brown eyes rounded up at me. Don’t give in to her. I watched her fiddle with her nails.

“I wanted to hear it from him.” She said softly.

I sat back into my chair and folded my hands on the table. I watched her eyes drift quickly from Jase to Leo to Tony. No one was going to jump in to save her this time. She crossed the line. They were just as pissed as I am.

“The day you were shot, while you were in surgery, do you know what we were doing?” I motioned to everyone in the room. “The five of us were on our knees in the chapel, praying.” I flick my gaze back up to her. She winced. “You brought the five of us to our knees to pray to a God that we don’t believe in, to beg for your life and you do this!” Her chest started to raised faster. Good.

“I-I” I took a step back and hit a warm wall. Instantly my body tensed knowing it was Mason. He held my keys out to me from behind me.

“I don’t get down on my knees for anyone princess.” He whispered in my ear sending goosebumps down my neck.

I looked back at Darien. He had his “I’m not taking crap” look face on. He never used it on me until today. “I just thought,” Looking down at the table feeling ashamed, “if I heard it from him, it… it would feel…”

“Real?” Jase assisted. I nodded to myself.

“And the tape we found of him shooting you wasn’t closure enough?” Asked Tony.

I sighed. This made me sound so foolish.

“He wants you dead, Drey.” Said Leo.

“But why? We were together for years. He never tried to hurt me before, then all of a sudden he’s shoots me! That doesn’t make any sense.”

“He did it to get to me! What don’t you get?” I watched as Darien’s knuckles turn white.

“What I don’t get, is why he hates you more than he loves me?” I yelled. I fought back my tears, but I couldn’t hold them in any longer. Darien shot out of his seat and held me to his chest. He never could stand seeing me cry. I placed my head on his chest and he kissed the top of my head.

“Do you know what else happened that night?” I shook my head no. “Three holy men from different religions were in the chapel and saw us praying.” I turned my head up to peer at him through my tears. He thumbed them away as they fell. “They saw how desperate we needed our prayers to be answered. And they joined us.”

“What?” I asked. I thought about what that must’ve looked like. Five mobsters, scarred and tatted on their knees praying with holy men… for me.

He nodded. Seeing where my mind went.

“True story.” Jase chimed in while stuffing his face with Cheetos. I looked over at him raising an eyebrow. When did he go grab a bag of Cheetos?

I moved out of my brother’s arms and asked him, “Now what?”

Darien turns to the guys, “Now we burn down that barn.” They all nodded. “Somehow Shawn figured out what happened that night. I can’t risk an investigation.”

“What happened in that barn?” They all went still.

Darien turned back to me. “You cried wanting to know who shot you and you misplaced our trust by running to your assaulter. And you somehow assume I’d make the same mistake by telling you anything else?”

“If it’s why I was shot. I deserve to know.” I crossed my arms over my chest.

“Didn’t you say, If you know who shot me I deserve to know?” He glared at me. “How well did that play in your favor?”

I shrunk feeling ten times smaller. “That was different. Shawn was my boyfriend.”

Mason went still. Tony, Jase, and Leo looked at him. I always felt when Mason was around. His being was electric, and his feelings for me where always out in the open.

Darien kissed me forehead again, “Get to bed.” He turned, “The rest of you, get to work.”

I made my way down to breakfast and as usual the guys were already seated. Greg, our butler laid out the goods. But I was craving my favorite coffee from down the road, so I decided to I’d go there first.

“Morning.” I said as I grabbed my baseball cap.

“Where the hell do you think you’re going?” Darien questioned me. He never questions me. But after yesterday I guess I deserve it.

I turned to him looking at my car keys in the middle of the table, surrounded by sharks, I mean the guys. I walked up slowly to the table. I could feel Mason eyeing my leggings, and sports bra, his gaze drifted to my midsection.

“Am I a prisoner?” I asked staring my brother down.

“No.” He said quietly.

I heard a smack and suddenly Jase needed coffee too. “Wait up!” He jogged after me. I rolled my eyes annoyed beyond belief.

As we left the coffee shop, I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself as Jase walked out with nine pastries for himself. We walked over to my G-wagon when two black SUV’s came speeding up toward us. Shawn’s crew.

“Get in!” Jase yelled. He jumped in and I sped off but the two vehicles were leading us away from home.

“Call Darien!” I shouted.

He pat down his body. “I dropped my phone.”

“Where’s yours?” He asked. I dropped my bag.

One of the guys waved a gun at us and we were sandwiched in between the two SUV’s as we pulled down a narrow road. About two minutes in I could see us approach a barn. Standing in front that barn was… Shawn. Bile rose to my throat.

We came to a halt. The two vehicles emptied out. We were surround by twelve men with guns pointed directly at us. We slowly got out of the car. They enclosed us pushing Jase and I towards the barn. Towards him.

“Now I see why the universe decided to save you. The irony of you dying here is beautiful.” Said Shawn.

“Shawn, what happened here?” I asked. “What made you snap? Talk to me.” I pleaded.

“You seriously don’t know? Wow, your dumber than I thought.” His men laughed. My face heated in embarrassment.

“Shawn, I deserve to know why after five years of dating me, you want me dead. What happened here?” I locked eyes with him. Come on Shawn, tell me. But instead, he tipped his head and gave a signal. Two men opened up the barn doors and we were hurdled inside to our slaughter.

“How old were we when we met?” Shawn asked me.

“16.” I said.

“And when did my mother die?” My brows creased in confusion.

“Two years ago.”

“And how did she die?” Shawn had a gun pointed at my forehead.

“You said there was an accident.” I trembled with fear.

He walked up to me and pointed the gun at my forehead. Jase yelled out but one of the guys punched him in the gut. Shawn ran his thumb across my bottom lip then placed his hand on my rear.

He leaned in and whispered, “It was Darien who killed her.”

My lids opened wide.

“Tell her I said hello.”
