3 Classes I Should’ve Taken in College

Now I’m learning these skills long after the last school bell rang.

I have both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

I majored in journalism with minors in political science and history. I took so many classes I enjoyed and others not so much.

Out of all the classes I took, here are 3 I should’ve taken:

Personal Finance

We all earn, spend, save and invest money.

It’s how the world moves and operates. It’s much of how we live our lives.

Don’t you wish you knew how to manage it a little bit better than you do? I know I wish I knew more about it.

College should’ve been the place to dive much deeper in this topic as it is the stepping stone before adulthood. Because we all deal with money as adults.

I manage money pretty well currently. I have a good amount of budgeting, investing and saving knowledge.

However, learning more about this would have been helpful. If I had learned about this in college, it would have elevated my knowledge in the future.

Nowadays, as I grow older, I’m learned more about personal finance. Mostly from experience, mind you.

I wonder if I would be ahead if I began to learn this in college. But I’m learning it now.

Building My Own Brand

Many of us have a personal brand.

Especially as writers, it’s almost crucial for our careers. It’s how we are noticed, read and known in the writing community.

If I learned more about this in college, it would have catapulted me to a career worth loving. I’m building my personal brand every day.

I think college should have been the place to learn more about this, not after graduation. Because we live in a digital world, it would have been great to learn online branding.

As writers, we want our work to be known and read. This is how we grow better and writing and promotion.

If you can, take a college class on building your personal brand. It might help you in the long run.

I know it would’ve helped me all those years ago. I’m learning it now while I can.

Cooking Meals at Home

College is more than making microwave popcorn and other similar meals. They aren’t even meals, just snacks.

Instead, college should be a time we learn how to cook real meals for ourselves.

I don’t want to spend my life eating fast food all the time. Instead, I want to know the food I am putting into my body at meals.

Cooking helps with this. I’ll know the ingredients, portion size and more.

If I would’ve taken a cooking class at college, it woild have been great. I know it would have expanded my horizons and pallet in the cooking world.

I learned a little bit on my own but a professional class would have been a memorable one during my time in college. It would have been so informational.

I cook all the time nowadays. What began as trial and error has turned into a great hobby.

I love cooking at home. I feel much better about myself after I do so.

It would have been special to learn this in college, but I am learning it now. Before it’s too late.

Closing Thoughts

College is a great stepping stone in anyone’s life. Just ask those who have attended and graduated college.

I loved my time in higher education. I enjoyed many of my classes. However, I wish I would’ve learned the skills mentioned in this article.

I know they would have helped me become a skillful person. No matter, I am learning them now.

As I am growing up, I’m on a path of continuous learning. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
