The Biggest Creatures to Have Ever Lived

Size Records

By Daniel EllisonPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

In this article, we will explore some of the most remarkable creatures to ever exist on our planet, each possessing unique features that allowed them to grow to incredible sizes.

First on our list is the Argentinosaurus, a genus of sauropod dinosaurs that lived approximately 94-97 million years ago in what is now South America. Scientists believe it was one of the largest land animals ever, measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing up to 100 tons. The first fossils of the Argentinosaurus were discovered in Argentina in 1987 when a farmer stumbled upon a giant leg bone while tending his cattle. Further excavations revealed a massive dinosaur that would have dwarfed most other animals of its time.

Next, we have the Spinosaurus, a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived around 112-97 million years ago in what is now North Africa. It is believed to be one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs to ever exist, with a length of up to 60 feet and a weight of up to 23 tons. The Spinosaurus is known for its distinctive elongated sail-like structure on its back, likely used for thermoregulation, and its long crocodile-like jaws lined with sharp teeth, allowing it to catch and eat large prey such as fish, crocodiles, and other dinosaurs. The first fossils of the Spinosaurus were discovered in Egypt in 1912.

Moving onto the ocean, the Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is the largest tooth predator on Earth and has the largest brain of any animal species. Found in oceans all over the world, these whales can dive to depths of up to 7,000 feet in search of food. They are easily recognizable by their massive block-shaped heads, which can measure up to one-third of their total body length. They have dark brown or grayish-blue skin and a distinctive wrinkled appearance.

The Titanoboa is an extinct genus of giant snake that lived approximately 60-58 million years ago and is considered to be the largest known snake ever, growing up to 42 feet in length and weighing around 2,500 pounds. The first fossils of the Titanoboa were discovered in a coal mine in Colombia in 2004, providing insights into the size and behavior of snakes during the Paleocene era and the overall climate and ecosystem of the time.

The Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is the largest animal on Earth, measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing as much as 200 tons. These marine mammals are found in oceans all over the world and can live up to 90 years. Blue whales have a long, streamlined body that is usually blue-gray in color with mottled patterns. They feed on tiny shrimp-like creatures called krill and can eat up to 8,000 pounds of krill in a day.

The Leedsichthys is an extinct genus of large bony fish that lived during the Jurassic period approximately 165-155 million years ago. It is believed to be one of the largest fish to have ever lived, with some estimates suggesting it could grow up to 50-55 feet in length. Despite its enormous size, the Leedsichthys was a filter feeder, similar to modern-day whale sharks, and likely fed on plankton and other small organisms by simply swimming with its enormous mouth open and filtering water through its gills.

Finally, we have the African Elephant, the largest land animal on Earth and one of the most recognizable. There are two species of the African elephant - the Savannah elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) - which can be seen in various parts of sub-Saharan Africa.
