Vocal Story 2021 - 222 Words On Time

By Mike Singleton 💜 Mikeydred Published 2 years ago • 1 min read

I noticed the time on the clock, it's LED digital analogue, or I wouldn't have noticed the exact time. It is 2:22 AM.

It is dark because it is the middle of the night, the curtains are shut and there are no lights on my street.

I don't know why I am awake, but I am transfixed in bed by the numbers on the clock, burning into my mind.

I have work in the morning so I know I need to get back to sleep, it's only another three and a half hours until the alarm sounds, and I know I won't want to get out of bed.

I look at the numbers on the clock, it is still 2:22, this minute seems to be lasting forever, although I know the next three and a half hours will pass in mere seconds.

Getting back to sleep is like riding a bike, if you think about what you are doing then you can never do it.

It is still 2:22, I think the clock has stopped, but it can't have because it is electronic. Once had a clock where the numbers were sheets that flipped over, so if it had been like that it could have stopped, but this is not that kind of clock.

I blinked and looked again

It was 2:23

    This is wonderful, Mike!!

  • I love when I wake up like this in the middle of the night and discover that a can still sleep for a few more hours. I'll be like "Merry freaking Christmas to me!" Loved your story!

  • I remember one night as a child when I couldn't sleep. Mom put in bed with her & dad. I lay facing the clock, just staring at it. After awhile she said, "If you keep looking at the clock, you'll never fall asleep." How did she know? I was facing away from her. The mirror on the dresser wasn't at the right angle for her to see my reflection. That's been a question that's bothered me now for over 60 years, lol.
