Artificial Intelligence Decides A Vocal Top Story

A Semi Dystopian Fiction

By Mike Singleton 💜 Mikeydred Published 14 days ago 3 min read

Introduction

This is a complete fiction, but I sometimes wonder how artificial intelligence can be used to make objective decisions on certain things. Even as I write this piece of fiction draft using Google Docs, there is a basic Artificial Intelligence running behind me, correcting my spelling, suggesting that my grammar is not correct and putting forward possible alternatives and sometimes getting it completely wrong. The intelligence doing that is called Grammarly, and at times it can be really annoying, but it is more than worth putting up with to help me produce something that is at least halfway readable by my audience. There is also the Google Docs checker that also tries to put me right, and between these two, you might get something without too many spelling and grammatical mistakes.

AI Decides A Vocal Top Story

So how can it do this in an objective manner? There must be thousands of Vocal articles, stories and poems published each day. Even my own small circle of friends produce much more than I can read, and I certainly produce more than they can possibly read but I certainly would not expect anyone to read everything that I create.

I knew a guy who used to throw out half the job applications he received without reading them, saying that he wanted one of the lucky ones. That is actually illegal, but if you don’t have time to go through thousands of applications, what can you do?

You need to actually prioritise the items that are most likely to benefit from.

So how do we identify those Top Stories?

You need to look at the ones that your audience is likely to engage with, so first of all, an audience is expected to engage with something that is familiar; the shock of the new is not always appreciated. This is why you get film and TV franchises and high street brands, which are preferred to non-branded products.

I will use the Facebook Vocal Groups I administer for the figures that I quote in the rest of this fictional story.

More than 85% of Vocal Members are on the North American landmass, so if someone is in that group, they should get preference because the audiences will see the story as being from one of their own. This may sound a little racist, but North America is very cosmopolitan, and because the creator is North American means that they are probably from any racial background

Also, while being North American gives you a little more weight, there are a lot of North Americans; you are one of many.

Women outnumber men 3:2, so again, being female should give you extra points. Vocal has a big Female audience, so a Top Story by a woman should gain good traction when shared on the Vocal Top Story page and their Social Media feeds.

Next, check the age bands, and you see that most Vocal members are above twenty-five and below sixty-five so that is another tick to add to possible top stories.

By doing this, we have fewer stories to properly assess as a Top Story, so now scan for words in titles and subtitles that might pull in readers, apply SEO to the content for current social media trends, and you should have filtered the stories that you see as worthy of being designated as a Top Story.

Take the first five or six on the list and then put them on the Vocal Top Story page, and your job is done without actually reading a single story.

Conclusion

This is a very dystopian fiction and the vocal on here is not the Vocal that we all love, I am sure that all the Top Stories are fully read and appreciated, but we all would love to be able to just press a button and then our work will be completed by a machine and we get paid for it

HR does use AI to screen resumes now and then get a group that seem to best fit the job for the Hiring Mgr to interview. Then it is human decisions. Personally I wish they didn’t showcase the Top Story - yes, give an award, but take away the category at the top of Vocal; because the TS seems to be the ones that people read the most, and the others get less attention from readers. The TS has already gotten an award with the badge and $$. 🤷‍♀️ In the end, Vocal is running the platform and I’m happy to be able to post my items here and always hope one of them will bring hope, laughter, enjoyment or knowledge. 3 yrs ago when this was written originally people were ?? As we still are now?? Only V knows. 😳 Good points, keep it up!!

The most surprising of all to me was the guy you knew who threw out half of the job applications he received without even reading them. I always suspected that to be rather common actually. AI is taking over HR in some companies anyway, perhaps less pathetic than that human you knew.

Are we not already AI...we have been chipped. can't escape it.

With AI taking over so much of our lives, I can actually see this happening.

Entertaining piece, but I fail to see how being female is an advantage. 1 out of 100 is the same percentage as 2 out of 200, as well as a better one than 2 out of 300, so the math just doesn't add up for me unless the number of top stories chosen per day changes.

  • Hmm....I wonder if using it to decide competitions etc is objective too! Point to ponder, Mike!

Fictional or not, this piece contains real food for thought. You never bore your reader, Mikeydred!

I again, you sure know how to pick a topic that is interesting and explain it in detail. This remind we of a mail carrier going postal, they can’t used AI to balance the load of work like vocal can do on their reads and getting the top story out. 👍👏

  • This was very fascinating!

Now you went and did it, you made top story and then turn around and Piss them off. LOL I expect no less from you. Good article.

Interesting read. I'm not sure how dystopian or fictional.it is, it could be spot on, who knows.
