Denial
unseen justice (Epic Beginnings Challenge)

‘I’m telling you, I saw something pink fly out of our neighbours house last night! And you must have seen the reports on Kismet, and all the strange stuff going on!’
My friend was adamant there had been a shift in the world, that superheroes and villains were coming out of the woodwork like some type of comic book brought to life. I just smiled and laughed at him, unsure I should tell him just how right he was.
It was still new and so confusing, but my powers came in last week. I made a wish on a shooting star that looked as if it was going to crash in the lake. I wished I could become invisible. So my step-dad couldn’t find me when he was drunk.
The next night when I heard him coming down the hallway after mum was asleep, I thought about the wish and how much I wanted to be gone from that place. He burst into the room, and looked straight at me, only for his face to become confused and angry, he looked around the room, in my closet, under my bed … then left in a huff to search the house. I followed but as I passed my mirror, I saw, well, didn’t see. I wasn't there! I was invisible, even to myself!
‘Um ... Danni, how’s everything with Gary?’ my friend asked softly.
As we rounded the corner to my house we saw the police sirens flashing …
It appears someone made sure some evidence against Gary was left out for my mum to find, despite his care to hide and password protect his phone. Someone must have looked over his shoulder without him noticing and seen his passwords ...
‘It’s been taken care of.'
He’d been struck by Denial.

Hehehehehehe that pink flying thing at the beginning! Thank you so much for that hint! Loved your story!
I promised some people I'd try and comment hints to connections with my other 'Epic Beginnings' pieces. This one hopefully should be easy to see the connections, but pay attention to the friend at the start and what they say ... 🩷
A very interesting read! Thank you for sharing!
