In this exploration, we will delve into each stage, assessing where AI currently stands.
The initial stage in the broader history of artificial intelligence is aptly named "rule-based." While the term may sound rudimentary, these early iterations served as the bedrock for AI's subsequent evolution. Originating in the 1950s, these rule-based systems operate on a strict set of predefined instructions, ensuring consistency but lacking adaptability. Despite their seemingly basic nature, they remain the unsung heroes behind everyday applications, from preventing burnt toast to maintaining smooth cruise control in vehicles.
Advancing to the next stage, we encounter AI systems designed for interactive engagement – the chatbots. These more sophisticated systems are context-aware, relying entirely on human input yet possessing the ability to learn new tricks. Whether aiding in customer service or guiding online purchases, these AI entities continuously evolve.
The third stage introduces specialised AI systems, capable of becoming experts in specific domains, often outperforming humans in terms of speed and data processing. Notably, AlphaGo, a computer program designed for the complex game of Go, demonstrated the potential of such systems. Evolving from basic rules to becoming a self-learner in AlphaGo Zero, this AI entity achieved unprecedented success in its domain.

AGI, the fifth stage, remains a theoretical goal, with some experts suggesting that current systems are beginning to approach this level. AGI, in essence, aims to replicate human cognitive abilities, enabling AI to tackle diverse tasks with adaptability and problem-solving skills akin to humans.
The sixth stage, Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI), envisions highly intelligent systems that surpass human genius in thinking and processing speed. While the applications of ASI are speculative, the potential ranges from solving complex global challenges to generating groundbreaking scientific discoveries. The timeline for the emergence of ASI remains uncertain, with many experts speculating beyond the next decade.
Finally, the seventh stage, often referred to as the singularity, anticipates a scenario where computers become smarter than humans, upgrading themselves at an exponential rate. Though currently beyond reach, some specialists predict the potential realisation of singularity by 2045, leading to a profound transformation in the relationship between humans and AI.
Despite the remarkable progress in AI, concerns about safety and ethical considerations persist. The prospect of singularity raises questions about controlling highly intelligent machines, prompting suggestions for safety features or off-switch mechanisms.
Nevertheless, AI has already demonstrated its transformative power in various domains. Real-time language translations, smart everyday objects, and collaborative teams of robots exemplify the positive impact of AI on mundane tasks and complex challenges alike.
