If you’ve been a follower of mine you know I hold Massimo in high regard as a writer. This book is a great example of why that is. This is unlike anything we’ve seen him do previously and there is so much here to really enjoy. The animal kingdom is home to some of the world's most beautiful and unusual wildlife that we’ve seen or have had the pleasure to see. In places like the Amazon we discover new species and in some of them we find new attributes that allow for medical breakthroughs. This takes place in Africa but the discovery is no less dramatic and what happens when you recklessly remove all the sources of a miracle cure from society and the world? That is what Massimo is doing here, he’s showing the recklessness of human nature and the one man willing to die to defend a life that he believes is precious.
I’m absolutely loving the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is impeccably rendered. The character development that we see through the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter which does a marvellous job in bringing them to life. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages introducing the story, the characters and the world they inhabit and this captures the imagination of the reader perfectly.
How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story emerge, grow and strengthen are magnificently rendered. These layers are where the bulk of the characterisation, the information, the plot twists and more are showcased and they add this great depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is perfectly presented.
The interiors here are extremely interesting. Sabium is perfectly rendered and we see the care, attention to detail and personality that is infused in the majestic creature. The people are very much cyborgs and the setting is the African plains and the linework we see throughout with the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create the detail within the work that we see is sensational. How backgrounds are being utilised to enhance and expand the moments as well as how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkable eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a great understanding of how colour works and how to get the maximum effect. Sabium really is this gorgeous and majestic beast and it’s a true pleasure to see this rhino.
This is a story, story and it revolves around a man and his love for and protection of the last rhino of its kind. It is highly emotionally charged and done in such a way that envelopes the reader in its world. This is heartwarming, upsetting and takes the reader through a gauntlet of emotions and it's only the first issue. With some stupendous writing and intense characterisation that’s brought to life through these wonderful interiors brings us an even greater range of storytelling than one might expect to find. Massimo is an amazing writer and his skill, talent and way with words will take you on a journey that will stay with you long after putting the book down.
