A review of Mission:Rejected

By Alan WalkerPublished about 2 hours ago 3 min read

Have you ever wondered what would happen to the world if James Bond decided to take the day off?

Would Scaramanga, SPECTRE, Blofeld or Goldfinger suceed in their plans? Or would MI6 send another OO Agent to take car of business?

Master Spy Chet Phillips does exactly that, passes the job onto the team officially known as The Backups. Welcome to Mission: Rejected.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY: MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Mission Rejected is a comedy audiodrama that is centred around the Extraordinary Missions Force's secondary spy team dubbed the Backups. When Chet Phillips decides he's not interested, or rejects the mission, it is up to EMF's hyperorganised Special Agent Skip Granger and his team of unlikely heroes to save the day from potential disaster.

Mission: Rejected is a superbly written comedy audiodrama with a gripping story, loveable characters, and pop culture references aplenty. Every episode will have you wanting more especially when the titles are clear parodies to the vast number of James Bond films or other famous films, each season of the show has a clear and disting story arc which seamlessly overlaps with the previous season and is great at delivering a great deal of misdirection. You'll expect the story to go one way but will receive the proverbial gutpunch when it goes off on a tangent.

The episodes are just long enough to feel satisfied but you will no doubt be hooked after the first few episodes and will spend hours listening to the (mis)adventures of Skip and friends.

Good Points

  • The writing is clever and chock full of references that fans of the show will love picking up on. The show even has crossovers with shows such as Oz9.
  • The ensemble cast are balanced and loveable. If you aren't rolling your eyes every time Bowden makes a references his extensive list of acting credits.
  • The show blends social issues into the story so well you don't actually realise that the episode is raising awareness, nor is the show afraid to cover topics such as politics or religion.
  • It's a must listen to for fans of comedy or espionage dramas. It may be more Johnny English than James Bond but anyone who listens to it will love it.

Bad Points

  • The show starts off with Skip and his team being the backup spies and still refers to them as backups when they are the selected operatives for later missions.
  • Sometimes you just wish that certain characters would just hook up permanently instead of casual flirting
  • Chet Phillips often comes across as a bit of a douche.
  • Episodes from later seasons often feel like the writers' are "phoning it in."
  • There isn't enough of the Admiral

Conclusion

In the end this show is worth listening to if you're a fan of the genre or just looking for your next binge. Fans of shows such as Oz9, Midnight Burger or Super Suits
