Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Key Themes and Messages

Harry Potter was a small boy with messy black hair and glasses. He lived with his aunt, uncle, and cousin Dudley in a house on Privet Drive. The Dursleys were not kind to Harry. They made him sleep in a cupboard under the stairs and treated him like a servant.
On Harry’s eleventh birthday, something strange happened. A giant man named Hagrid came to find him. He told Harry the truth: Harry was a wizard. Harry’s parents had been magical too. They died when he was a baby, and the evil wizard Voldemort tried to kill him. But somehow, the curse didn’t work. Voldemort lost his powers, and Harry was famous in the wizarding world.
Hagrid gave Harry a letter: he had been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Harry went shopping for school supplies in a magical place called Diagon Alley. He bought robes, books, and a wand. He also got a pet snowy owl named Hedwig. At the bank, he found out that his parents had left him gold. Hagrid also picked up something secret from the bank for the headmaster, Professor Dumbledore.
On September 1st, Harry took the Hogwarts Express from Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross Station. On the train, he met a red-haired boy named Ron Weasley, who became his best friend. He also met a smart girl named Hermione Granger. She was very good at magic but could be a bit bossy.
At Hogwarts, students were sorted into four houses. Harry, Ron, and Hermione were all placed in Gryffindor, the house known for bravery. Harry met many new people, including the strict Professor McGonagall, the kind Professor Dumbledore, and the unpleasant Professor Snape, who seemed to dislike him.
Harry also learned to play Quidditch, a flying sport with broomsticks. He became the youngest Seeker in a hundred years.
Strange things started to happen at the school. A three-headed dog named Fluffy was guarding something in a secret room. Harry and his friends discovered that it was the Philosopher’s Stone, a magical object that could give eternal life. They believed someone was trying to steal it.
They thought the thief was Professor Snape, who acted suspiciously. But they were wrong. The real thief was Professor Quirrell, a nervous teacher who had been hiding Voldemort on the back of his head. Voldemort was trying to return to power using the Stone.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione decided to stop him. They faced many challenges, including a giant chess game, a room of flying keys, and a logic puzzle with potions. In the final room, Harry faced Quirrell alone. He found out that Voldemort was still alive, but very weak.
When Quirrell tried to take the Stone, he couldn’t touch Harry—his hands burned. Harry’s mother had died to protect him, and her love gave him magical protection. Quirrell was destroyed, and Voldemort disappeared again.
Harry woke up in the school hospital. Dumbledore explained what had happened and why Harry was safe. The Stone was later destroyed so no one could misuse it.
At the end of the school year, Gryffindor won the House Cup because of the bravery of Harry and his friends. Harry returned to the Dursleys for the summer but now knew that he was special—and that he had a home at Hogwarts.
