To keep an airplane in the sky…

Without ever touching the ground.
This wasn’t only about fuel.
This was a story of sleepless nights…
Freezing December air…
And balancing life and death on the edge of the sky.
But the question was:
Did these two pilots truly break the impossible record?
Or did their plane vanish forever into the endless blue?
This is one of history’s strangest forgotten events…

🌆 The Hacienda Hotel’s Crazy Idea
In 1956, a man named Warren Bayley opened a hotel in Las Vegas.
It was called The Hacienda.
Unlike the city’s expensive casinos, this hotel attracted simple, hardworking rural people.
It wasn’t luxurious.
It wasn’t costly.
And that’s why ordinary people loved it.
But the problem was…
The profit was low.
So Warren Bayley constantly searched for new ideas to make his hotel famous.
One day, his friend Bob Timm, an Army pilot, gave him an unbelievable suggestion:
“If we break a world record…”
“The Hacienda will become legendary.”
The record?
To fly a plane continuously…
Not for days…
But for months…
Without landing.
Warren loved the idea.
But how could something like this even be possible?
⏳ The Obsession With Endurance Flights
When airplanes were first invented, flight time was recorded in seconds.
Pilots and engineers only cared about one thing:
How long could a plane stay in the air?
As technology advanced, flight times increased…
Until one major limit remained:
Fuel.
The larger the fuel tank…
The longer the flight.
In 1923, the U.S. Army solved this problem by refueling a plane mid-air from another aircraft.
And once that happened…
Endurance records began falling rapidly.
The first major record was set when a plane refueled nine times and stayed airborne for 37 hours.
After that, the world entered an endurance frenzy.
In 1929 alone, the record was broken five times.
But by the time Bob Timm suggested his idea…
The challenge was no longer about engines or fuel tanks.
It was about the limits of the human body.
Bob Timm wanted to break a record set in 1949…
When two Navy pilots kept a plane in the air for 46 days.
Their achievement became national news.
And Warren Bayley realized:
This could be the perfect way to promote the Hacienda.
So he asked Bob Timm to do it.
After all…
Timm was a respected World War II pilot.
🛠️ Building the Flying Machine
Bob Timm went to McCarran Field Airport.
He bought a Cessna 172.
Then he hired a mechanic to modify it for an endurance flight.
First, the co-pilot seat was removed.
Because if Timm was going to stay airborne for over a month…
He would need another pilot.
They would fly in shifts:
One controlling the aircraft…
The other sleeping on a foam pad.
The back bench was removed as well.
In its place, they built a small storage space — only 8 square feet.
A tiny sink was installed in one corner…
So they could occasionally take sponge baths inside the cramped cabin.
Then came the most important modification:
A massive 995-gallon belly fuel tank was installed.
And an electric winch system was added…
So fuel could be lifted up during flight.
They removed the co-pilot door and replaced it with a folding door…
Giving easy access to the fuel port.
Today, hanging outside a flying plane feels like something only seen in movies.
But back then, it was common.
Even stuntmen in the 1950s performed aerial transfers mid-flight.
To make refueling less deadly, they built a small foldable platform outside the door…
The only place in the entire aircraft where someone could stand upright.
The engine was modified…
And finally, the plane was painted with huge letters:
HACIENDA
The mission was ready.
