Occupying the northern reaches of the United Arab Emirates, Ras Al Khaimah is a captivating destination rich in history and natural splendour. Renowned for its exciting array of adventure activities, the region has been drawing active travellers for decades. From the wealth of outdoor excursion options accessible in the area to the impressive climbing and abseiling hotspots accessible to visitors of varying skill levels, here's why a getaway in Ras Al Khaimah is a must for adrenalin junkies.

Ziplining from the Country's Highest Peak

With the tallest peak and mountain in all of the United Arab Emirates located within its confines, Ras Al Khaimah affords visitors the chance to enjoy the longest ziplining experience on the planet. Towering above the surrounding landscape at a height of 1934 metres, Jebel Jais lets avid zipliners encounter the wildest and longest ride of their life across an expanse that not only includes meandering ravines but also jagged-edged cliffs. Travelling at speeds of up to 150 kilometres an hour is an awe-inspiring experience that's not for the faint of heart. Those who would rather sign up for a series of short zip lines which are 337m to 1km in length can always opt for the Jais Sky Tour instead. Even though the journey is flanked by suspended platforms at regular intervals zipliners will still be travelling at speeds of up to 60 km per hour.

Impressive Hiking Trails

Those who would rather stay closer to the ground and have a rugged adventure traversing up trails leading to the highest summits of Ras Al Khaimah will find that Jebel Jais is also perfectly suited for their favourite pastime. In addition to the gorgeous views accessible from the top, the trails which crisscross diverse landscapes will put the trekking skills of even the most experienced hikers to the test. Wadi Shawka is another popular hiking hotspot in this area thanks to the canyons, streams, rock formations and stunning pools one comes across on a hike across this terrain. Thrill seekers should only attempt this feat during the cool winter months from December to March, however, as the 10km hike which begins at Shawka Dam might prove perilous during the hot summer months.

Desert Safari Tours

Adventurists based at Anantara Mina Ras Al Khaimah Resort and other similar resorts in this part of the country will also find desert safaris among the top things to do in Ras Al Khaimah. This off-road excursion of a lifetime not only includes bumpy rides across the desert sands on a 4x4 but also plenty of opportunities to enjoy dune bashing and sandboarding activities. Those who wish to take it a step further can also spend a night under the stars in a Bedouin-style campsite.

Mangrove Forests

Blessed with some of the UAE's most fascinating wetlands and mangroves, this coastal ecosystem is also ideal for boating tours and kayaking expeditions. Often called the "lungs" of the city, the area is a big hit with birdwatchers as species including pink flamingos and herons occupy the lush surroundings of its shadowed forests.

Other Daring Pursuits

Travellers with a penchant for abseiling and climbing will also find local tour operators organising tours that are mainly concentrated around Jebel Jais which is incidentally a great place to enjoy a mountain biking adventure. Those who wish to take part in the survival course designed by the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp on Jebel Jais can alternatively learn the basics of surviving out in the wild with the bare minimum.

Seaside Thrills and Spills

Water sports lovers vacationing in Ras Al Khaimah's white, sandy beaches can also enjoy parasailing, jet skiing and paddle boarding activities during their stay while deep sea fishing expeditions are also accessible via local resorts.
