Pneumatic Actuators (Pneumatischer Stellantrieb) vs. Electric Actuators: Which is Best?

Pneumatic vs. Electric Actuators: Which Technology Offers the Best Performance?

By saif ullahPublished 2 years ago 4 min read

Actuators are particularly important in the area of industrial automation where mechanisms of control and management of mechanical systems are involved. Of all the types available, two of the most common are pneumatic and electric actuators; each comes with a different kind of benefit. This is important for any business involved in industriearmaturen since the choice of an actuator deeply influences efficiency, cost, and suitability of the system to certain applications of the business. Pneumatischer Stellantrieb and electric actuators are also discussed in this article, with the analysis of their characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages to help to determine what kind of actuator is going to be more effective for industrial usage.

Pneumatic Actuator

Pneumatic actuators can also be referred to as pneumatischer stellantrieb in German; they apply compressed air to create a force that can be used to move a particular mechanism or in controlling a particular valve. They are valued for the simplicity of their designs and implementations, their high speed, and stability. Electric actuators, as the name implies, use electric motors to power mechanical parts; they are often used for they are accurate and flexible. Advantages of pneumatic actuators include speed and easy which are generally faster than electric actuators making them suitable for operations that require high response time; reliability and durability since most of its components have reduced chance of wearing out, most often they are highly durable in extreme condition; cost which makes them cheaper to install and maintain especially when the system already has centralized air supply. They include: the precision and control of electric actuators to give accurate control that is useful in applications that demand the precise positioning; the energy expectation as electric actuators are mostly superior to their pneumatic counterparts since they fail to require constant supply of compressed air which tends to be unrealistically wasteful in energy; and the aspect of flexibility and integration whereby electric actuators are easier to integrate with modern day digital control systems known to be more elastic than one.

Economics Comparison

Generally, the comparison of pneumatic and electric actuators is made based on the costs. Industriearmaturen with pneumatic actuators are initially cheaper to install, if the plant already has a compressed air system. However, there are some disadvantages; some costs are incurred in production of the compressed air and other costs are incurred in the maintenance of the compressed air. Although electric actuators may cost somewhat more in the initial design and purchase phase, the long-term savings can be had because the electric actuators use less power and require less maintenance to operate. Deciding between pneumatic and electric actuators very much depends on the case. Pneumatic actuators are generally used in simple on and off or where high force and speed is needed. On the other hand electric actuators are perfect for applications that require multiple point control with fine tuning in addition to feedback.

Challenges

As it is known electric valves are produced with the prolonged working time in their conception, however, they require constant and proper maintenance for continuous effective work. Daily checks are done in parallel with control systems to check the valve function; examination of the actuators and the electrical connections to check for signs of wear or damage. Most of the problems associated with electric valves include; malfunctioning valves, leaks or variations in the flow rate, and can mostly be attributed to either electrical problems or mechanical deterioration. Maintenance is not only beneficial for the valves’ durability but also helps to avoid more serious problems and spending more money on the repairs.

Another fact proving growing awareness of such problems is the use of electric valves in industrial processes as well. These valves are usually favored over the pneumatic or hydraulic type because they are energy-savings since there is no need of hydraulic fluids or compressed air and they are also non-leaking. Ventil manufacturers are on the constant quest to minimize the environmental impact of its products in utilizing electric valves which are more efficient and sustainable. This includes the efficiency in the use of energy by the actuators, the kind of materials used that are more friendly to the environment and those that can be recycled are also improved.

Future Horizon and Technological Advancements

The outlook in the electric valves is quite bright due to the evolution of smart technologies and the IoT. The next generation of electric valves is likely to have improved diagnostic abilities, improved energy-efficiency, and greater flexibility. It can be assumed that these valves will be equipped with sensors that allow measuring such parameters as the position of the valve, flow rate, or the state of the valve that will help in terms of predictive analysis and system functioning. Further, with the increase in consciousness of sustainability, ventil manufacturers have been able to create lower energy consuming models lowering the overall energy consumption in industries.

Conclusion

Some of the factors that are used in choosing between Pneumatischer Stellantrieb and electric actuators include; the use of the actuators, the cost, and available infrastructure. Thus, pneumatic actuators are efficient and cheap and good for high-speed, high power applications whereas electric actuators offer precise control, efficiency, versatility and are best suited for automation. Since the actuators are divided by their purpose and objective, we may expect that with time certain sophistical and improvements will be made for both types of actuators. So there is always a need to evaluate the capabilities of each technology at the present and in the future so that each industrial automation need will be well met. Having know-how of every kind of actuator’s suitability and disparity, firms will be in a position to selectively choose which one would profit their organizational structures and ability to meet the demands of the contemporary industrial environment.
