Power Up Your Content With Custom AI Sound Effects

Capture attention with this easy upgrade

By Alex TuckerPublished about 3 hours ago 3 min read

Want to make your video and audio content grab and retain the audience’s attention? Custom sound effects can help, but only if you find the right sound for the right moment. That’s where creating your own AI sound effects is a game-changer.

In this article and the companion video embedded above, I’ll show you how to use ElevenLabs to generate custom sound effects. You can sign up for a free ElevenLabs account with 10K free AI credits monthly by following my affiliate link.

Use Cases For Sound Effects in Content Creation

Sound effects are more than just background noise; they’re powerful tools that significantly enhance my content. They've helped me:

Increase Engagement

A well-placed sound effect can grab attention and keep viewers hooked. I use them to punctuate jokes or highlight important visual elements.

Improve Clarity

Transition noises, for example, signal a shift in scene or topic, making my flow much smoother for the audience.

Create Atmosphere

From the gentle rustle of leaves to the booming of a magical portal, sound effects can immediately set the mood and immerse my audience in the world I’m creating.

Save Time and Money

Creating custom sound effects with AI is often faster and more cost-effective than traditional methods, which is a huge win for my workflow.

Getting Started with ElevenLabs

ElevenLabs has some incredibly reasonably priced plans, but you can also get started with 10,000 credits for free every month.

AI Sound Effect Examples and Techniques

Creating your own sound effects has never been easier. On ElevenLabs you can search for similar sound effects, then copy their prompt as a starting point and customize it to make it your own and produce something truly unique.

Fantasy and SciFi Sounds

These types of mysterious, almost supernatural sounds are useful in all types of content, they make both entertainment and education more memorable.

Device Sounds

For tech reviews, I often need sounds like a “realistic typewriter” or a crisp “camera shutter” sound.

Transition Noises

I created my own “swoosh” sound effect for seamless scene transitions in my videos. It’s amazing how much a custom transition elevates production value.

Tips for Prompting

  • Be Specific: The more detail I provide, the better the AI can understand my vision. I try to describe the texture, speed, and source of the sound.
  • Experiment with Keywords: I try different words and phrases to achieve the desired effect. Sometimes changing “woosh” to “swoosh” makes all the difference.
  • Adjust Duration: I control the length of the sound effect to fit my needs, ensuring it’s not too short or too long.
  • Tweak Prompt Adherence: This setting determines how closely the AI follows my prompt. I adjust this if the initial generations are too abstract.

Case Study: Crafting the Perfect Swoosh

Let’s walk through an example of creating a transition sound; my personal “swoosh” effect.

  1. Start with a Base Prompt: Begin with something simple like, “soft fabric swoosh, like a cotton towel pulled swiftly off the rack.”
  2. Refine and Iterate: If the initial results aren’t quite right, modify the prompt. For example, I might change it to “like a cotton towel whipped through the air” for a more airy, less ‘wet’ sound.
  3. Experiment with Variations: Generate multiple versions and choose the one that best fits the specific needs of my video.
  4. Final Tweaks: For a more air-like, high-velocity noise, try “swift, heavy swoosh, like a high velocity baseball whooshing past the microphone.” This creates a much sharper, impactful sound.

Advanced Techniques: The Sinister Laugh

I also use ElevenLabs for more complex, evolving sounds, like an “audience laugh track that starts sounding like normal canned laughter, but turns darkly sinister.”

Adding Layered Detail

I include details like “with everyone laughing louder like maniacs” to guide the sinister turn. I also specify that the laughter should build in intensity (a crescendo).

If the results aren’t quite right, I increase the prompt adherence to encourage the AI to follow my complex instructions more closely.

The Power of Sound

A well-crafted sound effect can be the difference between a good piece of content and one that really draws the audience in and creates a memorable experience. It captivates attention, creates atmosphere, and makes content more engaging and memorable for viewers everywhere.
