The Different Hats Writers Wear
Draw experiences from life from different perspectives
Writer, what hat will you wear today? Is today going to be the day for the fiction writer, the non-fiction writer, the blogger, the journalist, or the article writer? Will you be wearing the hat of the horror writer, the thriller writer, the humour writer, the technological writer, the science writer, or the nature writer? Whatever you want to write today, make sure that you are wearing the right hat.
A writer needs to develop a strategy for his writing career. This is when the writer plans where to write, what to write, and when to write his articles, blogs, and other literary contributions.
Plan: Create a strategy and a plan to develop a profitable writing career. Write all the features of the plan, leaving no stone unturned and no opportunity lost.
When the writer wears the hat of an author, he or she needs to plan his and her fiction and non-fiction books. They have to plan the subjects and the time of each of their publications, based on research.
Books: Start writing your first book, fiction or non-fiction. Publish your book on Amazon KDP, Draft2Digital, Smashwords, or on any other print-on-demand publishing platform. It is never too late to start writing, if you like writing short stories, write a couple and publish them by the weekend. Once published, blog about it, talk about it on social media, from Twitter to YouTube and Instagram.
As an article writer, you need to write and earn money by writing and publishing work on websites.
Paid Articles: Write articles for money and publish them weekly or daily, the choice is yours. First, do research online to find those websites that pay for articles. Pick a few popular niches and start writing on them.
Every author needs to wear the hat of a copywriter so that he or she can do advertising and copywriting for his or her published books, courses, and other materials.
Advertising & Copywriting: Do a course in advertising and copywriting, so that you are familiar with the skills of copywriting and advertising. After you have completed the course successfully, set up your own independent copywriting enterprise. I did a course in Copywriting from AWAI (American Writers and Artists Institute) and it was worth it. It helps to learn how to do advertising so that you can do your own promotional campaigns.
An Author needs to function as a Social Media Manager, in order to gain an online presence on social media platforms.
Social Media Management: Do a short diploma course in social media management or do a free course. You will definitely benefit from knowing all that is essential in your freelancing as a Social Media Manager. It helps if you set up your own social media accounts from Twitter to Instagram and TikTok. Start as soon as possible, so that you can gain followers who will follow your posts. Your followers today are future customers tomorrow.
A great source of revenue for every author is the creation of courses, which she or he can prepare and earn money online.
Courses: Using your literary skills, set up your own short and long courses on any subjects that you are interested in teaching. You can convert your books into modules for a short course. Create several instruction videos for the course. Prepare assignments for each module of the course. Next, you need to select a great course publishing platform. Do a bit of research and you will find a few course platforms looking for entrepreneurs to set up their courses?
Audio Books: Convert your books into audiobooks, either by hiring someone to read your books or by doing the narration yourself. There are a few websites that have professionals who can read your books for audio recordings.
Revenue Share: Join a revenue share website like Medium, where you get a portion of the income from the number of readers who read your writings.
Every writer and author should look to train as a Public Speaker, it is an opportunity for an extra source of income.
Public Speaking: As a writer, published author, advertiser, course creator, you will definitely be in demand as a public speaker. Do a little publicity informing organizations in your field of interest that you are open to giving speeches about your work or on any topic in your field.
Every author should develop a sales funnel so that he or she can market their works.
An author has several avenues to create additional streams of income from podcasting, to consulting, fundraising and blogging.
Podcasting: Create your own podcast and tell the world about your life, your work, and how you do what you do best, which is writing and publishing.
Hourly Consulting: Take on the role of a writing and publishing consultant or as a writing coach, you can charge by the hour for your services.
Fundraising: Take on the role of a Fundraiser, creating promotional materials for organizations that employ you for your advertising and publicity services.
Blogging: Maintain at least two blogs to advertise and promote your writing and freelancing career. Monetize your blogs with advertising, keep them updated, and your visitors informed with the help of a newsletter.
Every author needs to wear several hats in his or her lifetime. The best way to select your hats and to wear them well is to keep changing your perspectives in life. Every role that you select in life as a writer will have a great impact on your writing career.
