May the Winds of Autumn Bring Change - In September Autumn Comes Writer's Challenge

Top Story - September 2024

I look up at the turnip-coloured sun in a sort of realization. At the same time, I'm astounded by the desensitization of a civilization. It's almost like a lapse in intelligence in the collective. I'm not depressed, I don't believe in emotional lags. I prefer the temple swept with inspiration even if pouring down is a dilemma.

Admiring the beauty of nature around me I can't help but juxstapose with reality. The enormity of the cries of nature with the inner cries of the nuance of a comatose nation is something to consider. Autumn according to the calendar is almost upon us but is yet to embolden the outdoors with hues.

The leaves have not yet turned. Little bits of crimson fleck the space here and there amidst all the green. Flesh is browned by summer's stationary breaks in walking, matching the edges of a wild hedge. Yet brilliant shining lime imbalances the whole of it in the distance, and I remember once upon a time in life there was an outcry for any injustice! People came together for grassroots everything. Now the only reminiscence is bits of lawn which stick to my shoes in the morning dew.

This lack of caring that is now predominant in the world, some blame the internet. A focus online keeps one distanced. Others blame the governments for being more self-serving than ever as the universe clings to their jobs and their homes or indeed will be living off the very nature around us. Then there is the soaring crime rate, no one feels safe and burrows into their sheltered homes, indeed, as they should. There is also the reality show effect that influences viewers, and people, as if life is a spectator sport.

A small rabbit hops forward out of the greenery as a field mouse rushes back into it. A pup darts for both. Senses keen, I check the shadows for an almost outline of a coyote, where there is likely none. The tones between the branches may be for an artist's eye to decipher but they make the strangest shape for foliage to have a design of its own. To sit and enjoy the skyline view is to be lost in the vastness of it. I'm not sure how one can deny the existence of God at its magnificence. But that's another tale to enlighten, how the earth met the skies, saved for my short story collection.

Cycles of continuity, I remember taking post-grad studies in personality type theory and learning of Carl Jung saying that when STJs were the predominant personality in society the bomb would be created. A field of robots. The earth might tilt. I look at the field of life around me and it is so much more structured in a dynamic way.

Morsels of truth feed me now. A glint of shine smiling off the rooftops. Reflections in the pearl-like light of the tops of wildflowers. I think societal dissonance occurs from infinite controls where there should be none. Rules embedded in psychology, how to make a person motionless is by presenting too many controls.

So the answer then, lies in freedom. Freedom to make mistakes, freedom for the grass to grow. Let the dandelions be, and admire the curves of nature. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west but shines in the south all day. Maples, Oaks and Willows all have a root of their own, and their own splendid colour when the moon shines south. Nothing is going to change that.

Correcting mountains is the staple of the day when I have to change things and the controls are paramount. The wrongness of events weighs heavy on my mind. How did this get turned on me, when I lost everything? People who follow the status quo really suck, y'know? Everyone is out for themselves where there is nothing to gain...or did they? I wonder.

Fall used to be my favourite time, next to summer. A season of expectation, when dreams were started with the new year, evenings yawn too soon, and creative work that percolated all summer in the sunlight now burst forward in time with nature around us. Zero apathy in a world that has something to move forward to. Here is to the winds of autumn bringing change.

Out of home, out of place, planning for the future where furry tails will greet me and we together welcome future seasons.

The imagery is lovely, and life also has its seasons. Fall is also very beautiful before the cold

I had to read a couple of time to appreciate both the sensory and descriptive language that makes me feel ‘I can see and feel though my own eyes.’ plus the dichotomies you raise. Issues so concerning to me. The answer? I find great comfort in your words ‘ So the answer then, lies in freedom.‘ Pauline 🌸

My word, this is beautiful..I love the imagery throughout that gives it a depth, like Rachel said, but also gives it this poetic feel. While your thoughts and feelings on things give us lots to think about. Thought-provoking stuff that is so beautifully and eloquently, but conversationally, written. Congrats on a fine Top Story and entry for Mike's challenge.

  • Excellent!🤩 You covered so many important issues whilst tying it to nature in Autumn.✅ I especially liked: “ There is also the reality show effect that influences viewers, and people, as if life is a spectator sport.” & “ To sit and enjoy the skyline view is to be lost in the vastness of it. I'm not sure how one can deny the existence of God at its magnificence.” Nature always makes me feel closer to God💖.
