What Do You Do When Ordering And Buying Flowers

Why is it so expensive to purchase funeral flowers? Are you taken advantage of when vulnerable or is it something else?

My husband's brother died recently. The funeral is on Easter Monday. I looked first in the obituary. It looked to me like I could buy a tree to be planted in his honor.

Then his sister called and wanted to know if they could buy flowers and put brother across the bouquet. And also she asked if my hubby would do that for them?

Well, it just became my job. I spoke with a woman, asking if they were preparing any flowers for my last name. She said they are. She then proceeded to tell me it would be difficult to get a nice bouquet for $50. as the delivery is 20.

I asked then if it would work if we were to pick them up as we are going to the funeral?

She then said, there is the vase, brother tag, tax, credit card fee, and the prices of flowers are so expensive now. I said I would talk with my husband and call her back after that as it sounded like he would get a basket with mostly greenery and very few flowers.

My hubby is a thrifty shopper, some may call him cheap, and he has no idea what flowers cost and still wouldn't if his sister wouldn't ask that he handle this purchase. She should have asked me. Guess she doesn't know her brother as well as I thought she did.

Because he doesn't give me flowers, I told him that I don't want flowers when I die from him either as I won't be there to enjoy them.

Flowers from my daughter after I had them for a week or so. Still pretty, even though the roses are fading.

My daughter and I have been giving the same vase back and forth for a while now with fresh flowers. My daughters' favorite colors are red and purple. I go to the florist and ask for 35 dollars worth of flowers in those colors and it is always beautiful.

I think my daughter may pick up and arrange flowers from the grocery store when she is there. Probably costing her less. It is okay with me. I am not good at arrangements as when I cut stems and change the water, the arrangements I make look nothing like what the florist or my daughter does.

I love getting flowers and my daughter thought of this idea and I love that we do this and I love that she thought of it!

Shopping around for flowers can be a good idea. While shopping around my husband decided to increase his budget and we were able to settle on my favorite florist that had a spring special, the brother ribbon was just an added $3.00, and with tax, it was well within his budget of now 75.00! I believe it came to $67.00 including everything. They know how to keep my business!

After we settled on flowers, the florist told me that it is pretty common to pay 90.+ dollars for a bouquet with a brother ribbon. I figured that, as I had bought two plants last year when my brother died as the arrangements were so expensive.

I have one and my daughter has one of the plants I purchased. The thing I enjoy about that is when I am watering or caring for them, I always have a good feeling or thought about my brother.

I have a plant from my uncle's funeral in 2010 that I continue to care for and have good thoughts of my uncle every week, my sister died a couple of weeks before and my mother a year before and I think of all three of them when caring for my plants and when my plants' flower.

We will be planting some trees this year in our brother's honor on our property.

We will pick up and deliver the brother's bouquet on Monday ourselves with the shops' guarantee that they will pack them up to travel.

I love the idea of a living plant over flowers. Great article Denise.
