A Hush Over the World
There is a hush all over the world,
Like the earth just held its breath.
Not the hush of peace or wonder,
But the silence left by death.
The radios cut to static,
The trains all froze mid-track,
A mother called her child’s name once,
No voice came calling back.
The wind curled tight against the doors,
The dogs lay down and stared,
The neon lights kept flickering,
But no one stopped or cared.
A soldier checked his empty gun,
A preacher gripped his cross,
A thief stood still with trembling hands,
And knew how much he’d lost.
A hush like glass about to crack,
A hush like blood gone cold,
A hush where every heart still beat,
But no one felt consoled.
There is a hush all over the world,
A pause too long, too deep,
And somewhere, in that endless quiet,
Something wakes that was a sleep.

Love your poems Marie. I don't get to read all of them, but that is not because they are not good. This poem was great because of the story it told and the way it was built up. Loved it!
WOW! This is just so epic. It perfectly captures the feeling of walking on eggshells in a world about to explode. Some stunning lines in there as well. This should be a top story!
This is a poem that will make you think about what is really important to you and others. Good job.
