Achilles & Patroclus
a Sapphic epitaph

Achilles,
the storm,
and Patroclus,
the quiet shore,
knew more of love
than historians
who say
they were just
brothers-in-arms-
so bury me
or burn me-
only promise
that she will be
by my side-
the dust of our bones
settling into eternity-
mingled ashes
of a life
well loved

I can see how this won first place, this is a beautiful piece. Congratulations on your win :)
As a bit of a Greek mythology junky, I absolutely adore this. Please check out some of my Greek mythology subversion. Here are links to a fiction piece and a poem (from my Pomegranates collection): https://todaysurvey.shop/fiction/party-at-persephone-s%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E https://todaysurvey.shop/poets/persephone-confesses%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cdiv class="css-w4qknv-Replies">
Absolutely brilliant! I had high hopes for my own entries for this challenge, but yours is a masterpiece. A greatly deserved victory! I'm Bill, a.k.a. Bolt. I have gleefully subscribed to you. ⚡💙⚡
Beautiful.
I got pulled in by the title. Nice use of Greek mythology!
Congratulations Sarah!
Congratulations, Sara, on your win! Your poem is beautiful. "The dust of our bones settling into eternity" is such a powerful image. Poetry is my first love of writing and I am thrilled to have found you on this platform!
So powerfully done, and I really love the contrasting imagery of "storm", "shore", and "dust of our bones". I meant to comment sooner but report cards were kicking my butt the whole weekend--congratulations on this stunning piece, I'm so thrilled to see another teacher take the win :) ☺️💙🫶

Wow, killed me with this. Mind blowing finish "She will be by my side- the dust of our bones settling into eternity- mingled ashes of a life well loved"
Great and well deserved win
Absolutely stunning✨
Your poem is spot on. I had a friend named Sara Little who passed away in 2020. I loved her, and when I saw this challenge I decided to write a poem about my feelings of loss, because I believe that loss is when a person becomes more aware of love. Imagine my surprise when I opened the vocal email and saw that Sara Little was First Place. For a moment I was very confused. As a creative person, Sara Little would have loved your poem, she probably would have been so excited that she would have wanted to have connected with you immediately as you seem to have a lot in common with her. She was a person full of energy and laughter. She, too, was a teacher who wanted nothing more than to help empower her students, especially those from the LGBTQ+ community and also those with special needs. That’s how I met her, she reached out to me because she wanted to open a center similar to the one I opened in my town. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about her. It’s nice to meet you Sara Little, congratulations on your poem and lifting my spirits.
Outstanding and beautiful. Well deserved win. Nicely Done
