In these battered halls are sung the songs of broken yesterdays

Visions of sweeter tomorrows knelt blithely in the pews

Un-bittered by want and regret

To gaze at forgotten futures, slid now from the hands

As flecks of golden sand

Left sieving the cob-webbed hourglass for anything to learn

When that time had ended

These halls once rang with hope and laughter

And dreams to fill a sea

With hearts leaping to find better horizons

That were once within their reach

But when storm clouds gathered overhead

And the walls gave their final crack

The merry throng did silence

Leaving half-recalled whispers left

This is stunning, Ian. Felt this in my core. Such evocative language and stirring descriptions. Sad but poetically beautiful
