Chasing Down a Rarity

The greatest rarity I've found...

Life a lonely road of disappointment

Paved with medals I cannot win

Like jewels, too common to stand out

Yet too precious to blend in

A wayward wretch defined by things amassed

Priceless artifacts upon the walls

Shine with brilliant outer luster bright

Enough to dull the owner’s inner flaws

Wasted years chasing down a rarity

Searching rainbows for the pot of gold

Iron fist gripped tight to all I have

To fill the void of all I’ll never hold

That elusive dream of belonging

Fades to nothing every time

Dancing close enough to almost reach

Yet never to become mine

Blindly following another treasure map

X marks the spot of another horde

Eyes on the prize of new horizons

Until my pirate ship blew off course

Cast adrift in a sea of darkness

Battered by hardship’s unrelenting gale

Marooned on a deserted island

Where I found my holy grail

Kind eyes shining like diamonds

That saw in me only the best

Reassuring words worth more than gold

Contained in a thousand treasure chests

The calming touch of a hand

More precious than the jewels in my crown

It took me giving up the chase

To gain the greatest rarity I’ve found
