Christmas Elf sitting on a Shelf

Waiting for a summer day

The views are the same,

Nothing changes as he looks out.

The home is silent, the family is out today,

They have gone for Mass on Christmas Day.

It is now the right time for the Christmas Elf,

To stretch his leg and get off the dusty shelf.

He has loved sitting quietly on the top,

Where he sees life around him moving about.

He has not been moved from his shelf for years,

He has watched parties of champagne and of beers.

The family return from their outings one day,

A tiny hand picks him up and takes him out to play.

The tiny boy adds him to his packs of toys,

Cars, engines, planes, toy soldiers for little boys.

The tiny boy grows up to be a man,

All part of God's big plan.

The Christmas Elf is placed on the shelf,

He is soon forgotten on his dusty stand,

That is also part of the plan.

The years have gone and days turned tonight,

Children have grown and moved out of sight.

The tiny boy grew to be a man,

Now he sits at the window watching,

His grandchildren in the garden play,

As he did as a child on a summer's day.

On the dusty shelf sits the sad Christmas Elf,

Till a tiny hand takes him out once again to play,

On a bright and sunny summer's day.
