Dark Drinks Are the Devil

he ain't trust no one who don't like coffee

i exemplify the epitome of untrustworthiness

got my artesian spring water

and fresh-squeezed organics

herbal tea on steep arousing suspicion—but goddammit

—i wanna arouse sumptin' else

and he eyeballin' me down like my soul in jeopardy

of arabica bean sacrilege without salvation

i.d.'s the mortal flesh

hesitant to hold down soil-rich aromatics

plus opening statements

and i didn't prepare a rebuttal

closing arguments

on top of that

got nary a clue

what um finna dooooo

with his extravagance

of a 22nd-century beyond-tech coffee maker

only know that the answer to every question

is "yes twice"

as i fuse fantasy to future realities

i n h a l e

all the caffeine

relieve torso of t-shirt and

rub dark walnut brown beans over body

like a benediction exfoliant

like i've done it all my life

(puh)lease—calling on powers that don't even know me yet

(t)ease—for upbeat tempo

hint of smile

doubts dissipating

grievance gone

steam

and

stimulants

colossal brazen bathtub vats full of

black comfort sighs absent whys

since nobody said

it always

had to be

swallowed
