Flareup

The hardest part

It's not the calls from school

therapists and teachers,

SOS texts in the middle of a work meeting

"I'm not doing well, pick me up!"

They're hard, but they're not the hardest part.

Not the doctor appointments and assessments,

not the long nights and blurred vision filling up pill compartments.

It's not even the bone-deep fatigue,

the no-amount-of-caffeine or sleep

can begin to fill the edge of the void,

daily status quo burnout.

No, that's still not the hardest part.

It's not the time bleeding away,

one day melding into the next,

indistinguishable from the previous one,

or the friends I've stopped hearing from.

Nor the realization that I no longer dream.

No, that's not the hardest part either.

~

The hardest part is the hope.

It's the blasted

hope.

Yes, the hope is the hardest part.
