Hand-in-Glove

A Villanelle

By Gerard DiLeoPublished 2 years ago 1 min read
All in the fit.

Preventing ease of donning hand-in-glove

We wear vambrace against the other's clutch

We just can't seem to reinsert our love

.

Oneupmanship is vying from thereof

To sink in claws into arm's length as such

Preventing ease of donning hand-in-glove

.

Two blinded birds who fall as starving doves

Aware, not, of love's mandate--selfless touch

We just can't seem to reinsert our love

.

There is, invented doubt, from thieves above

Who flock, conspiring, pilfering as much

Preventing ease of donning hand-in-glove

.

Defeathered birds will wander, pushed and shoved

In falcon's sight, we're doves in aimless rush

We just can't seem to reinsert our love

.

In ignorance of dangers fraught whereof

We pass in rote and hobble on our crutch

Preventing ease of donning hand-in-glove

We just can't seem to reinsert our love

Villanelle

I tried to pick out a favorite line or phrase, but there are too many good ones here. A well-crafted villanelle!

The repetition of the phrase "We just can't seem to reinsert our love" creates a poignant refrain, emphasizing the emotional barriers that hinder a harmonious union, the metaphors of wearing vambrace against the other's clutch and the imagery of blinded birds falling as starving doves evoke a sense of vulnerability and the challenges faced in maintaining a genuine connection, the skillful use of language and the thematic exploration of love's obstacles make this poem both thought-provoking and impactful, we‘re deeply moved by the poem, loved it, wonderful Gerard, have a great weekend!

  • I like how even though you are writing something everyday, you are not sacrificing quality. Great work as always.

Brilliant use of metaphor! Although that’s not unusual in your writing.
