I Hugged My Friends Today

A poem for Los Angeles

I hugged my friends today

It’s something we often do

Arms wrapped tightly

We held on longer than long

Bodies trembled as we fought

The emotions bottled inside

Desperately seeking to ease the ache

And quiet the anxiety and fear

For a moment we forgot the world

The demons were kept at bay

The fires, the smoke, the devastating loss

Were momentarily put aside

Knowing that we were safe

At least at that moment on that day

Briefly sent our minds at ease

As we went our separate ways

I sent a silent prayer above

To keep them safe from harm

I hugged my friends today

It’s something we often do
