Lesson Learned Or Be Burned

Her placid days are behind her

The universe showered her with an unexpected gift recently,

Delivered in a cute little package and tied neatly with a bow,

She tore that wrapper to pieces, no gentleness required,

Intent on devouring the contents whole.

**

But she hesitated; thankfully,

Tested the waters, skirted its edges,

Watched and waited!

**

Intentions became clear — much to her horror,

A difference in priorities defended in arrogance,

And where once she’d explain the red flags away,

This time she began with eyes wide open,

As the cracks began to show.

**

She reeled back, space her answer.

**

She kneeled upon her patience and studied the temperament,

Understanding dawned in the absence of guilt,

She foresaw the dilemma, the options foretold,

And leant back into her power, taking hold of the reins,

Her heart the one in total control.

**

And it was here that she realised the gift she’d been given,

It was up to her to decide if it was a lesson to learn,

Or fluster through the idea she’d once more be burned.

**

And with that she took to her heels and walked away,

A quiet thank you but fuck off left back in her trail.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

It was up to her to decide- Colleen, this piece spoke straight to my heart, you have lived a life filled with emotional magnitude and you're still able to see the quicksand beneath the leaf clutter. Easily stepping aside and for me always wondering what if. The fall sure is fun, but the climb back is exhausting.
