Love Letters I Never Sent

A raw, emotional journey through the unsent letters of a love that almost was—and the silence that followed.

Love Letters I Never Sent

✒️ By Ali Asad Ullah

I wrote you letters you’ll never see,

Folded like secrets, inked carefully.

Each word a whisper I couldn’t say,

Sealed in silence, tucked away.

You asked me once what love felt like—

I said nothing.

But my hands trembled every time you blinked.

Your laugh became the weather in my chest,

Stormy when you left,

Sunlight when you stayed.

I wrote to you the night you didn’t call.

Dear you,

Why does silence feel louder than goodbye?

And again, the day you walked by

With someone else’s hand in yours.

My breath caught like a moth in a jar.

I wrote:

You looked happy. I pretended not to see it.

Then came the letter I never dared to finish:

If I had told you…

But the page stayed blank,

Like the space between us.

In the Drawer, Dust

The letters live in a drawer beneath my bed.

The top one smells like coffee and regret.

Some are smeared with rainwater—or maybe tears.

Some have lipstick pressed in the corners.

None of them have your name.

But they all scream it.

One says:

I love you in ways you will never understand.

Another says:

I hate how you make me wait for nothing.

And one I wrote half-asleep at 2:07 a.m. says:

You don’t know it, but you saved me once.

You were the only reason I stayed.

I never sent it.

Why would I?

You were already fading.

The Final One

There’s one letter I keep in a black envelope.

I wrote it after I saw you last fall,

in the bookstore we once swore we’d grow old in.

You didn’t see me.

You looked lighter,

Like you’d left all your shadows behind.

And I knew—I was one of them.

So I wrote:

Dear you,

This is the last time I’ll let you haunt me.

I’m not yours anymore.

And I never really was.

But I didn’t burn it.

It’s still there.

Waiting.

Like me.

To the Reader

If you ever find them—these letters,

Don’t judge the ink or the madness.

Some loves are too fragile for the world.

Some endings don’t need doors slamming.

Some people write goodbye with no stamp,

and still hope someone

will read between the lines.
