Shadows Passing In The Night

A rare connection

The sun disappears over the horizon,

Steam mists the cold evening air,

Eyes meet in the briefest of gazes,

Two strangers amongst the crowd.

**

An innocent comment strengthens the possibility,

Random sounds instilled upon the airwaves,

The invisible connection tugged,

Hidden from watchful eyes.

**

A whispered invitation haughtily offered,

Casually thrown about in conversation,

A whim — without buyers remorse,

A shy smile the only response.

**

A time was set, a maybe staged,

Impossible to know if the timing is right,

The dark hours waiting in hesitance,

Cocooned warmth as the sun bids good morning.

**

A pattern set, a date and time,

A short half hour in the scheme of things,

Two souls tethered in the wake of many,

As the world slowly turns unbidden.

**

Bare skin preens to the touch,

A graceful leg extended,

A whispered signal from one heart to another,

Shadows passing in the night.

**

Days set to the sunrise and the sunset,

Hours parted as life moves on in routine,

Half an hour of surreal reality,

A short break to render the mask.

**

Before the dawn a bittersweet goodbye,

A back borne to stand alone,

Two strangers, no earthly names ever uttered,

Ships gently tethered, sailing to opposite ends of the void.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
