Sub Rosa

The things we almost admit

A dog barked startling me,

easily spooking me

like it was punctuation,

breaking my almost-confession.

I think I whispered your name

just secret enough for only the spiritual realm to hear.

For someone to know my inner most thoughts.

The lid to my coffee cup wasn’t on right,

of course.

Just like everything else lately,

one bump away from unraveling.

Then I kept going.

Because if I stopped,

I’d have to admit

I was never just going to the store.
