Ekphrastic Poetry inspired by Philippe Halsman's Dali Atomicus

Black magic mystery, floating free in the midst of an anarchy

A deeply dark dangling gateau tree, a rictus smile,

a bulging glee

This achromic dichotomy bares a gallant monochrome tone.

A rogue eyebrow, rises—ambiguously alone

His Menjou tash soars its horns

as he explores Velázquez’s regal artistry.

I splurge for colours, I purge for paint,

wishing and writhing, smear me like butter,

cream and clutter.

Mixing my blends into trends,

infinite surrealism, bend your images into possibilities,

structures, and sounds

Dark shadows cast over a double-breasted breast, with pocket squares, and a midnight dress

Long-handled brushes, blush drumsticks on waiting canvas

An Eiffel Easel standing rigid with grandeur

Leda Atomica stares with bare breasts—that glaze behind a gush

Its water, translucent, ripples and burrows,

icicles furrowed waterfalls

A feline triad, scared and startled, triplicity triumvirate,

flying, frozen screaming, chosen

Here pussy puss puss,

Kitty Kat Cat,

Be like water, my friend,

Be like matte

***

Dali Atomicus explores the idea of suspension, depicting three cats flying, water thrown from a bucket, an easel, a footstool, and Salvador Dalí, all seemingly suspended in mid-air. The title of the photograph is a reference to Dalí’s work Leda Atomica (which can be seen on the right of the picture, behind the two cats). Source

Triumvirate and rictus are new words for me. Loved your poem!
