The Final Farewell
A poem for my dad on his 65 posthumous birthday
The light has left your eyes,
As I hold your hand this last time.
A lifetime of memories arise,
Even as I know you must climb.
The music of your soft breath,
The warmth of your gentle caress,
All sold now to the angel of death,
While I remain bereft, alone, in distress.
The path ahead is bleak and drear,
No light to guide my way.
My heart now fills with anguish and fear,
As in sorrow I silently pray.
The life we shared, those seasons of cheer,
Those tender moments, sainted, hallowed, now past.
In the abyss of loss so dark and sheer
This final farewell shall forever last.
My soul in grief now torn asunder,
The heavens pour my mournful cry.
The light and life of all wonder,
Fated now, my dear, to die.
And this final farewell breaks my heart,
But I have to let you go.
