Chats Through the AM
A boy said hi to me online this morning!
My insomnia kicked into high gear overnight
I wasn’t sleeping, I was just laying there
Thoughts of being ‘I’ forever looped inside
Fear of a ‘We’ never forming, never coming
But then it came, ‘Hey’ from a boy … a man
Tall, handsome, gentle and kind with words
Am I actually awake? Or is the dream most cruel?
This is an actual, honest to goodness … nice guy
We chat long into the night, actually the morning
Here’s the thing that proves time again, a deal breaker
"I’m transgender", I say … and wait, wait for the unmatch
But this time … this boy that I find very attractive
Says the most unexpected, the never before said
‘Not a problem, doesn’t change anything’ I … smile!
He says I’m pretty, says I’m kind, he is so nice
Likes my openness, appreciates my honesty, this boy
We talk all night, into the morning, now sleep is unwanted
Lay down facing my phone, legs wiggle above me happily
Talking of meeting, of plans to spend time, to know each other
I do not sleep, this feeling new to me, desire to talk for hours
Almost lost in disbelief, a boy likes me, I ‘made his night’
Mournfully the new sun rises, it is time to say goodbye
For now while in different hemispheres, talk again soon
A girl giddy with building excitement, for a time of meeting
I still cannot believe, still do not see what he does in me
But this morning I could not sleep, and a boy said hi, online

The rise of social media, GPS tracking on phones and personal devices, and the general vibe of never being ‘offline’ or out of sight from one camera or another today. It all seriously hit the private eye business model. People just don’t need us anymore, they can discover proof of a spouse’s infidelity with the help of an Uber driver now. It’d been a few weeks since any decent paying work, things were getting tight. I wouldn’t be able to be picky with clients anymore. I decided I would take whatever job next walked through my door, regardless of taste or pay, whatever came next I would do it … I had to do it.

Human beings need sincere relationships in life, and when these relationships are built on love and sincerity, there is no greater blessing. Yet greed and selfish motives can turn even the closest bonds into burdens. By God’s grace, Abid is an educated, employed, and responsible man. His parents had passed away, and he lived with his older siblings. Still, he was never a burden to them, as his own business was running successfully, benefiting his brother and sister-in-law as well.

It ended like every other stupid idea. Badly, and alone. I’m researching digital confession ethics, he said. A tech ethicist. He gestured at floating data I couldn’t see then pulled out a physical notebook. Actual paper, fountain pen. He held it up like he was showing me scripture.
