On Tuesday January 13 Yorktown Somers hosted New Rochelle Bronx at The Mildred E. Strang Middle School in Yorktown heights and fell by a close score of 49-39. Not a powerhouse team, the numbers don’t tell the whole story, according to Jimmy Gallivan of Yorktown High School.
“Even if a lot of our meets are not so good and we don’t win” said the senior swimmer, “we still work toward being the best we can be.”
Third in the 200 meter freestyle, the racer likes being in between as far as all these races go. “It is not entirely long distance, and it’s not entirely a sprint,” he said. “This is a balance between the two.”
The senior also did double duty as the caboose in the 400 Meter Freestyle relay. “You’ve got to hold what the rest of the team has done already,” said Gallivan, who anchored the team to a win with Finn McEnroe, Noah Pettigrew and Russell Badurski.
Still, he won’t swim competitively at the college ranks. But the Harvard freshman will have his hands full nonetheless and has a primary goal already in place. “It’s to definitely study,” assured Gallivan, who also took second in the 100 meter fly.
On the other end of the relay, Finn McEnroe starts the Tusker Husky engine. “I set the pace for everyone else to hold,” said the sophomore, who also won the 500 meter and took third in the 200 meter individual medley.
Happy with the win, the Yorktown Husker also likes focusing on the stationary part of the swim team. “I love how everyone wants to hangout before and after,” he said.
Fun is what Shane Wissing called the camaraderie but in the pool he prefers to kick back. “I like the powerful strong start of the back stroke and you keep going,” said the Yorktown swimmer.
Tyler Solimine did so all the way to the end in the Breast Stroke. First place in the 100 meter sprint, the Somers senior took to the race early on in his swim carreer. “I found it was the easiest for me, and it just came natural,” said the Tusker.
The senior doesn’t just go it alone, though. He runs the second leg in the 200 Meter Medley Relay, and he understands that his job is to be the first one to make up the existing difference. “If the first person comes back late, I have a lot of time and space to make up,” said Solimine.
Of course, there’s no complaints if the swimmer in front of him has an off day. “It’s ok, he’s one of my teammates,” assured Solimine.
A support that requires no effort on this team. “It’s a great community, and I love being part of it,” he concluded.
In addition, Ryan Davis won the 50 meter fly and finished third in the 100 meter free style and was in on a second place finish in the 200 meter Free Relay with Michael Naber, Michael Badurski and Wyatt Cooperman. Finally, Michael Naber won the 100 meter back stroke and Anthony Gade was second in 100 meter Breast stroke.
