The Last One Standing: Seattle Mariners

Becoming a Cinderella story is something that the AL West team is aiming to accomplish

By Mark Wesley Pritchard Published 4 months ago 3 min read

According to multiple sources, the Los Angeles Dodgers are still the heavy favorites to win the World Series. However, I beg to differ on that. The Seattle Mariners success this season has been recognized and noticed by the league and baseball world. It's all due to mainly one player: Cal Raleigh. He's been breaking records left and right and I believe that the Mariners will not only reach the World Series, but to win it all. Raleigh will be named World Series MVP. I made both of these predictions in my Postseason story, which you can read down below.

I know that this may be a bold prediction to some, but I like the M's chances of reaching the Fall Classic. They're one of five teams that have never won a World Series title. The other four, if you're curious to know, are the Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, who have since been eliminated from the Wild Card round, Tampa Bay Rays, and Milwaukee Brewers. Not only that, but they're also the last remaining team in the American League West that has yet to win a World Series title. And no, I still won't acknowledge the Houston Astros as two-time World Series Champions because of the scandal that occurred nearly a decade ago.

The Seattle Mariners were incepted back in 1977 in Seattle, Washington. Their current home ballpark is T-Mobile Park. Previously, they were called the Seattle Pilots from 1969 to 1977. As of 2025, they've never won an American League Pennant or a World Series title, as I've already mentioned. They have won four American League West titles (1995, 1997, 2001, 2025) and clinched two Wild Card berths (2000 and 2022). Their team's name originated from marine culture in Seattle. Another interesting fact is that the Mariners currently hold the record for the longest World Series appearance drought in Major League Baseball.

The American League West is an ever-competitive division, and both the Mariners and Astros were playing a back-and-forth game of musical chairs to see who would win the division crown. In the end, the Mariners got the last laugh over their division rival. The Astros missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016, which put a smile on my face. Besides, Jose Altuve isn't getting any younger, but I digress. The absence of both Alex Bregman and Justin Verlander did them in.

Why did I choose the Mariners to win the World Series? I want them to be like the 2023 Texas Rangers, where they won their first World Series title. This team has the talent and potential to do the impossible and make a statement to the entire league and fans. Sure, their pitching has been a bit iffy this season, but I feel like the Mariners have what it takes to possibly upset the defending World Series Champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, if they were to face them. If the Rangers did it, so can the Mariners. Why am I so invested in them as a Rangers fan? I like their chances, and I love a good underdog story. I was surprised that they have only two AL West titles and never reached the World Series. The latter might become a reality. Plus, I was also surprised that it's been 25 years since their last AL West title, when their now manager Dan Wilson, who was a catcher at the time, was on that Mariners team back in 2001. My team isn't in the playoffs this year, but I'm fully backing the Mariners and rooting for them to reach the World Series and win it all. The Mariners have to be on their A-Game, because their journey to the World Series is going to be a difficult one. Will the Mariners become the Cinderella story their fans are longing for? It depends on how well they do in the playoffs. Their fight is far from over. Mariners, it's your time to win a World Series title.

Mariners fans, I want to hear from you? Do you think that your team will reach the World Series and possibly win it all? Also, do you think that Cal Raleigh is an automatic shoo-in for the American League MVP Award? Everyone else can join in on the conversation, too. If you enjoyed this story, please give it a like.
