Passport to My Personality: Travel ‘This or That'

A globe-trotter’s take on travel preferences, from aisle seats to solo adventures—what do your choices say about you?

By Azmat Roman ✨Published 7 months ago 3 min read

As travelers, we all have our little quirks and preferences. Are you the type to pack two weeks early or stuff everything in a carry-on the night before your flight? Do you dream of bustling cities or remote islands? Luxury hotel or local Airbnb?

A while back, I stumbled across a “this or that” travel challenge on social media, and I couldn’t help but dive in. It was a fun way to reflect on what kind of traveler I’ve become over the years—and maybe learn a thing or two about myself along the way.

Here’s how I answered these travel-inspired questions. Maybe you'll find yourself nodding along or thinking, "Wait, I’d choose the opposite!"

Window or Aisle Seat? ✈️🪟

This is always the first travel debate that gets people talking.

I used to be a window seat person all the way. Nothing beat watching the clouds roll by or catching that golden hour view while soaring above the earth. But after enough long-haul flights and awkward trips to the bathroom, I’ve shifted to Team Aisle.

Now, I love the freedom of stretching my legs and getting up without the dramatic “excuse me” shuffle. It may not be as scenic, but it’s definitely more practical!

---

Hotel or Airbnb? 🏨🏠

I’ll take an Airbnb over a hotel 90% of the time. There's something about staying in a real neighborhood that makes me feel like a local. I’ve had the best travel memories thanks to unique Airbnbs—like that treehouse in Costa Rica or the charming canal-side flat in Amsterdam.

Hotels are great for certain trips, especially when I want amenities like a pool or gym. But when I’m in explorer mode, Airbnb wins for personality and experience.

Solo Travel or Group Trips? 🚶‍♀️👫

Solo travel has my heart. There’s a certain kind of freedom in being completely in charge of your own adventure. No compromises, no set plans—just you and the world.

My solo trip to Kyoto was one of the most peaceful and enlightening experiences of my life. I wandered through bamboo forests, wrote in my journal at a quiet temple, and struck up conversations with locals that I wouldn’t have dared to if I were with a group.

That said, a group trip with the right people can be magical too. The laughter, shared mishaps, and late-night talks over local wine? Unmatched.

---

Adventure or Relaxation? 🧗‍♀️🧘

I try to balance both, but deep down, I’m an adventure junkie. Ziplining through rainforests, hiking volcanic trails, or learning to surf—I love the adrenaline rush and the stories that come with it.

Relaxation has its time and place. I mean, who doesn’t want a beach hammock and a piña colada every now and then? But I feel most alive when I’m pushing my limits just a little.

---

Planned Itinerary or Spontaneous Exploring? 🗺️❓

Confession: I’m a recovering over-planner. I used to create color-coded spreadsheets for every trip. But somewhere between missed trains and unexpected street festivals, I learned the beauty of spontaneity.

Now, I plan just enough to hit the must-sees, but I always leave room for the unexpected. Some of my favorite moments happened when I got “lost”—like discovering a tucked-away bookstore in Lisbon or stumbling into a night market in Taipei.

---

Local Food or Familiar Favorites? 🌮🍔

Local food, every single time. It’s the best way to experience a culture.

I’ll never forget the time I tried balut in the Philippines (look it up—then decide if you're brave enough), or when I learned to make pasta from scratch in a tiny Tuscan village. Food connects us all, and I believe every dish has a story behind it.

Familiar food is comforting, sure—but I save that for when I’m back home.

---

Souvenirs or Memories? 🎁🧠

This one’s easy: memories.

Sure, I’ll bring back a postcard or a magnet here and there, but the real souvenirs are the journal entries, photos, and the feeling of wonder that sticks with me. I’d rather invest in experiences than trinkets.

The night I watched the Northern Lights dance above me in Iceland? No souvenir could ever top that.

Which travel “this or that” do you resonate with most?
Whether you're an aisle-sitting, street-food-loving, adventure seeker or a window-gazing, hotel-hopping, relaxation lover—there’s no wrong way to explore the world.

Travel reveals who we are—and maybe even who we want to become.

If this inspired you, share your own travel preferences in the comments. I’d love to know what kind of traveler you are!

Good job in sharing about your likes in travel. I like the window seat in airplanes, both hotels and local, souvenirs and memories, relaxation but will journey through wherever, planned and spontaneous for there are always surprises.
