Silence In Prompts

Even in silence, someone is listening and it may be our brain

Write Down the Bones Deck to Free the Writer Within — This is my wish for you: that you take these cards, grab the topic on one side and write, write, write. Then flip to the other side of the card and take note.

I’ve always used the word topic instead of prompt. Prompt is the starting place, but topic indicates more the idea of plunging in and immersing. Natalie Goldberg

Plunging in and immersing is what is expected today. Using silence to help on this day. Using the timer to write about memories of silence on a Wednesday. Some don't like silence, I do when rhyming. It goes faster when I am timing.

Natalie Goldberg's Write Down the Bones Deck to Free the Writer Within - Give me four memories of silence. Go -- keep the hand moving for at least ten minutes.

1) Our drive to a son's house and back. The only interruption to the silence was a stop to go to the bathroom on the way down and one on the way back. I was wearing earplugs and hubby was listening to Christmas music. I expected him to be listening to old country, or I may have joined in.

2) I had a pulled muscle this week and had pain medication on board and wanted nothing but sleep to heal my pulled muscle and it helped. No severe pain.

3) Then being alone in the house, it can be silent. I read or write without any disturbance. Silence really can be golden!

4) To block out noise when I am writing on the computer I will put my headphones on. It blocks out the typing on the keyboard noise, the furnace and dryer noises, and the hubby watching TV, cooking, or making noise in the kitchen.

Notice here I say, "Give me"' sometimes I say, "Tell me," "Explain to me," "Depict for me." It's a little nod: I'm signaling to your wild writing mind - - That someone is listening. You are not alone. It breaks the feeling of isolation. Go ahead, tell me about those secret, maybe big, dark rich, abundant, still, hushed, quiet spaces - good or bad. The page will receive them all. I hope your pull muscle heal soon. I guess I take silence for granted. When I am writing, I seem to block out the noise especially if the words are flowing in my mind. It's like when I am reading a good book, I cannot hear the outside world. Great prompt, did not even know this is another word for it.
