What Is Augmented Reality and How Can You Use It for Gaming and Work?
Here’s why I believe AR is the future for media consumption as well as a tool for the workplace.

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that enhances the real-world environment with digital information and media, such as images, videos, and sound.
AR has the potential to transform the way we play games and work, and it is already being used in a variety of industries, including entertainment, education, and retail.
One of the main ways that AR will change gaming is by enhancing the gameplay experience. With AR, players can interact with the game in a more immersive way, as the digital elements of the game are overlaid in the real world.
For example, a player could use their smartphone or AR headset to see and interact with virtual objects or characters in their environment. This can make the gameplay more realistic and engaging, as players feel like they are really interacting with the game world.
You’ve probably already used an AR application on your smartphone if you’ve played Pokémon GO. The element of the game in which you search your surroundings in order to find a Pokémon to catch is actually an element of AR.
In addition to enhancing the gameplay experience, AR also has the potential to change the way we access and play games. With AR, players can access games anywhere and at any time, as the game is overlaid in the real world.
This means that players no longer need to be tethered to a console or computer to play a game, as they can simply use their AR device to access the game wherever they are.
AR also has the potential to change the way we work. In the workplace, AR can be used to visualize and manipulate digital information in a real-world setting, making it easier to collaborate and make decisions.
For example, an architect could use AR to visualize and test out design changes in a 3D model of a building, or a surgeon could use AR to see a 3D model of a patient’s anatomy during surgery.
This idea of the use of AR in a medical environment was actually shown off in an episode of “The Good Doctor,” which is a medical drama series on Netflix. Here’s the clip in which this AR idea was used.
AR can also be used to train and educate employees, as it allows them to practice skills in a simulated environment.
For example, a mechanic could use AR to learn how to repair a car by following instructions and interacting with virtual components, or a chef could use AR to practice new recipes and techniques.
One of the main challenges of AR is the cost and complexity of the hardware required to access it. AR headsets and devices can be expensive, and they may require specialized software and training to use.
Additionally, there are concerns about the potential for AR to distract or disorient users, and there may be privacy and security issues to consider when using AR in the workplace.
Despite these challenges, the future of AR looks bright. As technology continues to evolve and become more accessible, it is likely that we will see AR being used in a variety of industries to enhance the way we work and play.
Whether it’s through enhanced gameplay experiences or the ability to visualize and manipulate digital information in the real world, AR has the potential to change the way we interact with technology and the world around us.
Personally, I can’t wait until consumers can get their hands on an affordable AR headset that will be used to consume every type of media, whether it be gaming, movies, or TV.
