Redpolls Enchant Cayenne
Cayenne watched the flock of tiny Redpolls eating the hulled sunflower seeds mixed with thistle she had sprinkled across the snow mounds off the back porch. She loved watching these tiny finches, smaller than Chickadees. The tiny bird wasn’t bothered by the extreme temperatures; today, it was fifteen degrees Fahrenheit.

Snowshoeing along the mountain trail, dark clouds rolled overhead. Visiting the Pacific Northwest from my Alaska home, I knew how the weather could change in the mountains in a minute. Different climate than Alaska, but I had the skills to handle it. My planned route was provided to the rangers; I had an avalanche beacon and was outfitted for deep snow and negative temperatures.

“Baby, I love that ruby on your finger!” He watched her from their bed, happy to be back from the Bush. Mike’s fiancé, Cayenne, smiled at him. “I’m flying media people over the Wickersham Wall on Denali, so I must head out now. Love you!” She kissed him, handing him a hot mug of coffee.

“Eddie, Mimi, we are finally past spooky Kluane; the lights across the lake and no vehicles on the road made it eerie. The howling wolves creeped you out, didn’t they Eddie? You were all shivering and whining. Yep, and Mimi slept through all of it. It’s OK, Eddie, just a few more days until we get to Anchorage.”
