Sleep Tight, Shaggy Maggie
Down on Broad Street, the crackheads drift like dirty wraiths through the ruins of their burned out squats and homeless men in baggy jackets push shopping carts full of soda cans past the shattered windows of dead stores. It’s an autumn midnight and the bars are closing, so the hookers lean against chipped brick walls here on the fringes of downtown, one eye out for business and the other out for the cops.

When the Reverend Henry Chilton sees the angel, he drops to his knees sobbing with joy. The half-scribbled sheets of tomorrow’s sermon fly from his desk, floating down on a summer-scented breeze from the open window, and his teacup, caught by an unwary elbow, shatters into porcelain shards on the floor.

A Cold Wind
Late at night, she sleeps curled by the fireplace with her wings folded tight along her back. She won’t sleep in the bed with me, afterward. She’ll rise and stretch, and settle on the woven hearthrug like a dog, with the firelight washing red and gold over her skin.
