Rachel Reviews: At a Time Like This by Catherine Dunne
I really enjoyed the storytelling of Catherine Dunne. This was a straightforward read which examines the relationships between four friends across the years and how their experiences, both shared and otherwise, shape their lives. However, whilst Georgie, Maggie, Claire and Nora seem like a tight-knit group (with the exception maybe of Nora, who is always a little of an outlier), there are secrets that are kept despite their closeness and the book is about whether you ever really know someone as well as you think you do.

Denial
Dave's immediate response: to deny. "I don't know what you're talking about." Dave continued to walk ahead. "Stop." Bethan was behind him and he was tempted to continue but he did as he was asked. He composed his face as she came level with him. She stood directly in front of him and scrutinised him.

Be Honest
Dave thought about Bethan's question. Could he be honest? Yes, he could but he wasn't prepared for the fallout from that grenade and the damage that it could do him. Not a chance. Could he give her pieces of honesty? Yes, he could. There were things he could tell her that would give her bits of the picture he wanted her to see.

Rachel Reviews: Yellowface by Rebecca F. Kuang
The first thing that needs to be commented on is what a cover! I remember seeing it in the bookshop and it immediately catching my attention. From there, my curiosity was piqued. I know the old adage "Don't judge a book by its cover" but it's got to draw you in somehow, doesn't it, before words can hook you?

Rachel Reviews: Little Deaths by Emma Flint
I liked Little Deaths and what it sets out to do. Ruth Malone is a mother and our introduction to her in the start of the book perhaps does not present her in the best light, and in some ways sets the tone of the book: should we be so quick to judge based on what we think we know from appearance and lifestyle?

Into the Woods
It felt strange for both of them, walking together like this. The years where they were one floated around them, like a ghostly wraith, its presence discernible but never quite fully grasped. Anybody watching them as they set off along the path would sense that they were not strangers but could not mistake the estrangement lumbering along with them, shown in the space between each other and the rigidity in their postures.

Don't Call Me Bethy
"Don't call me Bethy." Bethan bristled at the endearment. Dave flinched at her implacable tone, regrouped. "You're right. That was...wrong. I'm sorry. It's just..." He tailed off, hoping that words left unsaid would convince Bethan that he held some feeling for her still, that he was struggling to keep his emotions in check. Just the right level of vulnerability. He shrugged.

New information has come to light...
Bethan I've had a text from Dave! Weird. He wants to meet. I'm "working" from home because, well, I couldn't think before meeting with Luke tonight, knew I'd get nothing done. I'm going through what he might tell me in my head and my focus is skewed. Nothing else seems relevant.
