Thoughts from a Balcony: Missing Mac Miller
Music has always been a healthy dose of vitamins, nutrients, and the freshest sip of water quenching thirst I’ll ever get. I wake up every day wondering if I’ll hear a new song that’ll catch my attention or become my new found obsession... or possibly change my life forever. I start my day off with a proper playlist to begin the day on the right note. It's like the equivalent of a daily morning prayer for me.

While there are a number of celebrity dynasties, many stars got to where they are through talent, hard work, and persistence. The music business is particularly demanding, with many musicians working day jobs alongside their music careers even after their first album. From David Bowie's job as a butcher's delivery boy to Kurt Cobain's stint as a janitor, many musicians have spent years working the register or sweeping floors to support their creative craft and their dream of making it big. Here are some jobs famous musicians had before they were able to turn music into a successful career.

Long Live Mac Miller, King of the Weirdos. Top Story - September 2018.
I first heard of Mac Miller in 2010. I was 12 years old and had just started to care about what kind of clothes I wore. I was going into the 8th grade and I knew exactly what I wanted to get for the new school year: snapbacks, crewneck sweaters, and Nikes. I had stumbled across Mac’s “Nikes On My Feet” video that summer, and became enthralled with the youthful rapper’s confident mic skills and unique fashion sense. I related to him. He was a young suburban white kid who loved hip hop more than anything, just like me. He loved skating around with his friends and getting high, just like me. He was hopeful and full of life, just like me. And as the years went on, I still always felt that Mac was just like me.

The Phenomenal Aretha Franklin
ARETHA FRANKLIN—QUEEN OF SOUL! Throughout my life, I have always heard that music soothes the savage beast. This concept came from different people. Some I know or knew, some I don’t know. Perhaps, that’s why I have always been a person who can appreciate different genres of music. From each song that I listen to, despite its genre, I listen closely to the lyrics to hear if the words are positive or negative. When I think back to the different music that I was exposed to coming up as a child, I am truly grateful and thankful to all those people in my life who taught me to value the different styles of musical artists. It’s because of them that I am, musically, a well-rounded woman.

Kanye West Gives Drake an Apology on Twitter
It's another "I'm sorry" from Kanye West as he took to Twitter on Wednesday in order to make an official apology to Drake addressing their current feud. You would think he could honestly have put everything onto one tweet but he ended up putting it in nine different ones. His earliest tweet, "Sending good energy and love to Drake and family and crew. I haven’t seen the show in person but the images look incredible online I understand where the confusion started." Along with the tweet, he had posted a screenshot image of Drake's stage that included a scorpion to promote his new album, Scorpion.

Appearances Aren't Everything
I don't know if it's just me but I can never get enough of Taylor's speeches during her concert tours. She brings out a lot of great advice and so much that it needs to be shared with everyone who needs to hear it whether it be about speaking up after being sexually assaulted, surviving bullying, or realizing that people may or may not be happy even though they may look that way.

Zion.T - A Truly Incomparable Artist
Just a few months ago there was a bus strike in the city where I'm based. It was a pain for everyone involved, forcing people to change their daily commute options, and forcing me to take a completely different bus route using a different company, adding around one hour onto a journey that was already tedious enough. As a person about as accustomed to bus 'chit-chat' as a wasp to Winter, most of my journey is filled with music coming through the typical Apple in-ear headphones (classy I know). It's not the best way to get from A to B, but there is something important to me about starting my day with music. It can make a drab start uplifting, change my mood completely, or just provide me with a welcome distraction from the numerous children that entertain themselves in slightly less mature ways than my musical route.

Lamentation for the CEO of Soul Who Stood for Respect
The titles of royalty are bandied about in America as if they lived in the United States. It is as if the forefathers did not devise an antidote to tyranny and oppression with the Declaration of Independence. There has been a King of Swing in Benny Goodman; a King of Rock in Elvis Presley; a King of Pop in Michael Jackson; A Queen of Pop in Madonna; A Princess of Rhythm and Blues in Aaliyah; and of course the alleged Queen of Soul in Aretha Louise Franklin, just to list a few. This last honorific is close but not quite what Miss Franklin should be remembered for concerning lifetime. She was the CEO of soul music. Much like Frank Sinatra was Chairman of the Board (this was actually do to his status on the board of Reprise records, however), Franklin could command a stage with her larger than life presence and deep, controlled vocal power. No honorific title related to royalty suffices when it comes to the female boss of soul music.

The Sounds of Solange Knowles
I must admit that music has always been a very interesting topic for me. Growing up listening to different styles of music taught me to appreciate the different genres used by the solo singers and groups. There are few singing groups of the 1970s through 1990s, who were blessed to have recorded at least one album, that I haven’t heard of. At one point in my life, I listened to different genres of music daily. From the Jacksons to Jefferson Starship to Destiny’s Child and many more, I enjoy and appreciate the difference in their style of singing and music. There is an instant connection between music and me because I appreciate differences.

Madonna at 60 - The Evolution of a Legend
Madonna’s 60th birthday celebrations are still continuing and who can blame her. Turning 60 is a highlight for anybody. At the start of Madonna’s career, it was predicted she would be a “one hit wonder.” To still be at the top of her game at the age of 60 is a celebration alone. Madonna, however, has evolved into a mega star and earned her legend status. The path was not easy and success did not happen overnight.
