2023 Music Journey Into Outer Space
A Brief Bit About My Music History I grew up listening to 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s music. My dad has been a major influence on my music tastes, having introduced me in my childhood to the wonderful and wacky sounds of new wave and the iconic 70’s and 80’s soft rock and pop songs. I didn’t know who exactly I was listening to back then, but as I grew up, I always remembered them and liked that kind of music. Growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s, I was naturally exposed to the music coming out at that time. I distinctly remember listening to Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin, and NSYNC on CDs. Interestingly, I never fully took to the music of my own era. I loved the sound of the 80’s. When I was a teenager, I started really paying attention to who and what specifically I was listening to as a kid. Hall & Oates, Journey, Huey Lewis and the News, Chicago, Barry Manilow, Genesis, REO Speedwagon, Simply Red, A Flock of Seagulls, Tears for Fears, Cyndi Lauper, Spandau Ballet, Talking Heads, Styx, Air Supply, and an endless list of so so so many more. I did have some other distinctly different music periods in my life but, from my childhood to 2022, the main music I listened to and preferred was from the decades before my birth.

2024 Soundtrack While Enduring, Adapting, and Moving Forward
Bad Hand It was deep into a midwest winter. The skin-biting, below-freezing air relentlessly made going outside a dismal experience. Slushy, slippery snow piled up along the streets required extra caution to navigate, especially at night when we often found ourselves active. Time was running out as the month progressed seemingly faster every day. My parents, brother, and I were in the process of moving to a house after almost 20 years of renting in a much smaller place. Extracting all the settled artifacts of two decades was a mix of amusement at finding long-lost remnants of our life there and dread because of how much stuff we had tetris-ed in that we now had to move. It was a surreal time going through the moving process. We weren’t sure we would ever find a place of our own. After the many disappointments of potential homes that would meet our needs slipping away from us, our hopes were slim. Then it actually happened. Like, it was for real. I really can’t describe how utterly unbelievable it felt for us to finally be able to move on and have our own space to settle and grow in.

The soundtrack of my year started off with the song Alaska by Caiola , an indie-folk singer. I had a new relationship starting to grow, but my fear of commitment to something more was creeping in. One of the lyrics is about resisting the urge to add another affirmation to the list on his lover's wall. Because that meant adding to their life and he asks if they were leaving or just coming home. I resonated with that greatly since I was always asking myself if I was coming or going. Whether I was going to finally stay this time, and had I found my home. He sings about being terrified to let the relationship mature, and wonders if they even should. That became a reoccurring line in my life, and in everything I did. I used to tell myself I was doing the right thing by leaving by hoping to spare them the pain of staying. I wondered if I was worthy of adding another line to their life. Always afraid that I might want to stay for once so I resisted.
