What Have You Done For Me Lately
Somewhere in my parents' garage is an old file box full of mix tapes I made in middle and high school. I refuse to let my Mom throw them out. It would mean throwing away my teen angst, love of grunge, and my obsession with love songs made evident by the number of tapes entitled "Slow Songs" in my youthful, round handwriting. It was also a lot of work. Some tapes were carefully planned out, while others took hours to create waiting for the perfect song to come on the radio and pressing the "play" and "record" buttons in unison at just the right time. And of course we cannot forget cranking the cassette reel with a pencil to make sure it did not begin 5 seconds into the first song. I was very proud of my skills and even though it is much easier and cheaper to create a playlist today, I have to admit I do miss the dedication and joy that went into it. I miss the trips to Tower Records and Rasputin's, searching for new cassette singles (it was usually all I could afford) after a new music video premiered on MTV. Ah the music days of yore and yesteryear.

Social Distancing From Cupid
I'm not one to make excuses, but I'm sure we can all agree on blaming Covid-19 for ruining our Valentine's day this year. If there is ANY holiday that should be neutralized in the name of Corona it is definitely Valentine's day. This playlist should lend a helping hand to anyone who feels left out, downhearted, or just downright cramped by the restrictions of Covid-19.

The Top 10 Most Unromantic Songs to Avoid on Valentine's Day
First, I must say, it was easy to compile this list of the most unromantic, un-Valentine songs. The hardest part was narrowing them down to just 10. Just reading the lyrics brings back memories of my worst relationships and feelings of heartbreak and self-destruction. It took a lot of chocolate and wine to bring me back from that dark place.

Valentine's Day: Make drunken singing into a hairbrush acceptable again!!
Calling out to my fellow millennials. Bring your side parted hair and gather round! This wouldn't be an Anti-Valentine's Day playlist without the classic opening song from Bridget Jones' Diary. As cringe worthy as it was epic, this scene made every one of us feel that little bit better about the time we too, had gotten drunk by ourselves and cried/sung a classic 80s love song at the top of our lungs. It was ok. We were not alone.

Gurrrlz, we got this! We don't need no stinkin' man!
My dad was a high school band and choir teacher. He taught us to love music in all its forms. I grew up listening to everything! No genre was off limits. If it had melodies and harmonies that were interesting to the ear or even clever lyrics, it was celebrated in our house. To this day, my playlist consists of everything from bluegrass (Have you ever heard Nickel Creek???) to old school rap and hip hop (Dolla Dolla Bill, yall!)

Thank you, next...
Another year another day of...ew, no thanks. Admit it this is probably one of the most, if not THE most overrated holiday. There's tons of things you can do to try to avoid the love fest and make yourself feel better. There are many different kinds of therapies for people other than the general sit in the office and have someone listen to you complain and mope about your feelings. Personally music is a really good form of therapy because music speaks words that I could never say or think of. It helps get the feelings, emotions and thoughts of what I'm trying to say about a situation out.
