Reminiscing before the New Year
I stopped making or writing New Year's Resolutions in 2016. I had quit smoking on my own that year, then after about 2 months I fell off the wagon. I decided that year I wasn't going to fool myself anymore. I have a new tradition. Right after Christmas, I like to think back on the year and think ahead about the new year, and compare the lessons learned and goals still available for achievement. Thinking about a soundtrack of songs that represents the themes or moods of the past year is a great idea, so looking back at 2024 here is a month by month playback.

My Harvest Vinyl Collection
Introduction I can't remember for certain the first Harvest record that I bought. My brother bought "Black Night" by Deep Purple and I then bought "In Rock" because both records shared the song "Speed King" which I always wanted to sing live, but, so far, have not had the opportunity. "In Rock" is back in my vinyl collection along with the ones I have included in the lead photograph, and this is a playlist of songs from Harvest Label records that are in my vinyl collection.

For twenty-four years the music of Train has comforted, encouraged, and cheered me. Although most of the members have changed the music has never failed to resonate, always touching and influencing my inner monologue to bring back my inner song.

A Bittersweet Symphony. Top Story - December 2024.
Counting down from December (right now, as at the time of writing) to the beginning of 2024. The beginning of the year that is about to end (2024) is way different and significant than the ending. This may be true to form for some people, where the next holiday season leaves off from the last one somehow. In other words, you are revisiting any unfinished business from the previous holiday season in the current one, whatever shape or form that comes across for yourself.

The Darkest Playlist
[I apologize ahead of time for commercial ads present in the links] It comes to no surprise that my Spotify Wrapped for 2024 contains many songs from my “Let’s Get Scared, Barb” playlist. To me, Halloween is a year-round treat like pumpkin spice lattes or hot apple cider. I have dozens of playlists, each with its own goal: workout, chill, Christmas, Latin, yard work, hurricane season – you name it, I most likely have a playlist for it. One of my playlists is entitled “YOU DISRESPECTED ME?” and meant to be played after a frustrating day of substituting a class of impudent students. Every few months or so, I revisit my playlists, add or subtract from, or rearrange the songs depending on my mood at the time. If not, I tend to memorize the order and expect the same songs. The songs in my Halloween playlist, otherwise known as spooky $hit, show up across different playlists as well. 2024 was another year in darkness, sparked by occurrences of grief in the past decade, and because of that, I prefer to write about death, terror, ghosts, ghouls, or witches. This fear of the unknown is a common theme in my writing.
