investigation
Whodunnit, and why? All about criminal investigations and the forensic methods used to search for clues and collect evidence to get to the bottom of the crime.
The Only survivor of her family: Brenda Lin
It was only this year that I learnt about this story, as I was watching the news, which not only shocked me, just from learning about the story, but because the crime happened in the country I am living in – Australia. Mind you, Australia is a big country, but it surprised me that I did not even know about this story. This story is set back in 2009 where a young girl named Brenda who, at the time would have been 15 years old. Was on a school trip to New Caledonia with Cheltenham Girls High School, when the murdered killed all of Brenda’s family members, which included her parents, two brothers and aunt (sister of her mother). That murdered was charged in 2011 and that person happened to be the uncle of Brenda (the brother in law of the family), known as Robert Xie. It wasn’t until 2017, that Robert was found guilty of murdering all five family members. I learnt about this story this year because, it was until February of 2021, that Chief Justice Tom Bathurst and Justices Robert Allan Hulme and Robert Beech-Jones rejected Xie’s appeal to be released from jail. Which I cannot understand why this guy, Xie would even think he would be allowed out on parole or bail. But then, it wouldn’t surprise me because, no matter where in the world you live, the justice system isn’t really fair. Sometimes it will let those who have done hideous crimes out on parole or bail. Yes, some of these people may turn their lives around or they may decide to repeat the offence again, which could be worse than the first crime they committed.

Delay Diploma in Dentistry Destroyed Doc
Delayed Diploma in Dentistry Destroyed Doc Five short months changed the course of history for the young man, born John “Doc” Henry Holliday, in Griffin, Georgia. Venturing hundreds of miles north to attend the best Dental College in the country in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Holliday proved his dental mastery in March of 1872. Unfortunately, he was forbidden from officially graduating until he reached the age requirement of twenty-one. Rather than work for another dentist until his birthday in August, Doc decided to travel the world, in hopes of finding the perfect place to open his own dental practice.

The Bloody Benders
Southeast Kansas had its very own serial killer family -- possibly the first serial killer family of the United States. The Bender family has long been a subject of gruesome lore in the area where I was raised, and over the decades, the interest has never waned. With the advent of websites that share newspaper archives, the depth of knowledge about this bizarre family as well as the spread of conjectures, misinformation, and hypothetical circumstances has only increased the mystery.

Delivery Dangers
It was the summer of 1992 and my 12-year-old little brother was on a mission to win a grand adventure to visit Yellowstone National Park in the winter. All he had to do was be in the top five to enroll the most subscribers to the newspaper he delivered for, the Idaho State Journal, before fall. We all figured it would be an impossible feat considering our town only had around 300 people in it, and he was already delivering the paper to most of them. Of course, there was no way he could compete with employees in a large city, so it was a massive shock when we learned he had indeed won and would get to go on an amazing adventure.

The Mystery of SL-1
On the evening of January 3, 1961, nestled in the desert away from the rolling hills and titular waterfalls of Idaho Falls, Idaho, sat Stationary Low-Power Reactor Number One. There have been plenty of fascinating and infamous nuclear accidents over the years throughout the world, but this one might just plague me the most. At this point, you may be asking yourself what this has to do with true crime? Just hold on to your pantaloons and we’ll get there.

My Journey Down the Rabbit Hole
Everybody’s gotten so de-sensitized towards people being arrested and claiming they’re innocent. Aren’t we all guilty of glossing over a story of some poor sap who got arrested for something “he didn’t do”? I know I am guilty of doing that--numerous times. However, fate had other things in mind & threw a monkey wrench my way. I didn’t see it coming and damn sure wasn’t prepared for it but my life was turned sideways by corruption. I never really paid attention to the news stories that featured the word “corruption” in them. I always believed the word was related to white-collar, victimless crimes. That could not be further from the truth. As a crime junkie, I never saw “corruption” listed as a cause of death, but it should have been. A double murder case with national media attention brought corruption to my front door and it will bring it to yours too.

The Hollywood Con Queen
In summer 2015, aspiring screenwriter Greg Mandarano received the email he’d been dreaming of. He had been sending query emails to every production company he could find online, and Jing Huilang, a film executive from The China Film Group, had replied to say she was interested in his script. Thrilled, Mandarano eagerly provided everything she asked for: responses to essay questions, a synopsis, a copy of the full script, a 40-page mood board and a pitch. Within just a few weeks, Greg and his writing partner Dave were on their way to Indonesia to meet with producers.

The ocean alone can tell
When Mercedes Alcocer said goodbye to her husband Miguel on that hazy morning of September, she would’ve never imagined that it would be the last time she would see him. Miguel had gone on a sport fishing trip with a group of men from the Yucatan Rotary Club, all of them residents of the city of Merida, in Mexico.

truly criminal
truly criminal (these things do not “just happen”) by the ADHD Accountant – Krid I have enjoyed the Phantom of the Opera since I was a child. Part of it may have been the exclusion by my Nana who took all of the family except my sister and I, the youngest. She was confident that we, as mere children, could not, would not, be able to appreciate the experience.
