An Antiquarian's Race Against Time
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley, or so I thought… As a book collector and antiquarian, I treasured history, storytelling, and artifacts. I was on my way to a new antiques shop in the Valley that I’d heard about, searching for a specific book of world history that I hoped would complete my collection. Other bookstores in town seemed at a loss for my request. I'd searched every bookstore and antiques specialty shop in town for this treasure and my last hope of finding it was at the latest antiques shop downtown. The shop had no name — only an address. I drove my car down some cobblestone roads, swerved into an alleyway and parked.

Immortal Affairs
There was an unusual silence that enshrouded Bill and Karina. Bill didn’t think much about the lack of conversation, his mind much more focused on the steak dinner in front of him. He was starving, shoving bite after bite down as if he had just been rescued from the Sahara. It was only when the lights above their booth started to dim that he finally looked at his girlfriend. She sat perfectly still.

Dragon Trials
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. Dragons only ever migrated down from the Star Reaches when the winter cold reached its peak, which was around every three years. No one was quite sure why the winters ran in cycles like this, from a misting chill in our long safe valley to the cold Freeze where the snow would creep down the very slopes of the Star Reaches, and even begin to invade the gentle swamps that gave us most of our food and colour.

The Compliance of Knights
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. I'm sure they wish they hadn't come here, but regret is always futile. I've lived my life evading regret as much as possible, but now, in the heat of this battle, it is hitting me harder than my sword against my enemy's chainmail.

Divided by Fire
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. My world wasn’t always broken in half. My whispers brought them, but I didn’t ask them to do what they did, so why was I being followed? I didn’t want the glorious, fiery genocide, or the sphere of mesmerising black mist that imprisoned our entire army. I wanted to fix it. I needed to be the first to cross the Valley. Free our soldiers before Rykar’s carnivorous monsters came for us. The air was sour with their impending arrival. Time was running out; we had no defence. The man following me knew it was all my fault. He must have. I wouldn’t blame him for hunting me if so. Maybe if he only knew my reasons. Or maybe if he realised the dragon’s veil also trapped my husband. I was barely even used to my new name - Mrs Jolene Aston. And already I was without my Graeme. I had nobody to run to. Nobody to protect me if this man robbed me or attacked me… or worse.

Secrets of the Dragons
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Up until recently, the worst anyone had to worry about in San Fernando was paying for their ten-dollar latte or occasionally outmaneuvering a flashing homeless man. The most vicious creatures on the streets were studio executives on the hunt for growing talent with dreams ripe for the crushing.

Vowed to the Old Gods
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. The boundaries, though invisible to the human eye, were clearly marked and maintained by the witches who served as guards to the Old Gods. Tales passed down from the humans made it clear that the witches protected the humans from the dragons. Tales passed down from the dragons made it clear that the witches protected the dragons from the humans. But the one thing everyone seemed to be able to agree on was that the witches were a cold force: a solemn group, as stern and haughty as nuns, cloistered away in the mountains where they could pray and practice magic in silence…

The Dragons of Valley High
There weren't always dragons in the Valley, and let me tell you: it was so boring. Of course some people complain, but some people are always complaining. For instance, when I was just a little kid, there were all kinds of heated arguments because our school officially changed it's name to Palmer Valley High. For the hundred previous years the school had operated under the name of a Confederate General. Gag. You'd think that people would understand why that had to change, but you'd be wrong.

Daydream
I sit here on this slab, complete with pen and notebook. My surroundings are full of lush greenery and a waterfall rushes by. The birds make sweet melodies out of their cute little tweets, while the animals in the fields communicate and sing to each other. The sky is a mesmerizing blue, and the sun is so bright, diamonds dance off this grey dull slab. I have been sat here, mesmerized by this beautiful imagery for hours, and yet I still have a blank page. The beautiful scenery is distracting, and it has completely blanked my mind.
