How to Be an Ally to Your POC Cosplayers. Top Story - October 2018.
The cosplay community is full of creative and nerdy individuals who love to come together to embrace their fellow nerds in fandom shenanigans. As much as the community embraces our differences, we still aren't exempt from issues like racism and colorism and other -isms/phobias. There have been too many occasions when a POC (person of color or NON-white) cosplayer dresses up as a non-white character and get told their skin color is "too dark for that cosplay." There have been cases of white (or Non-POC) cosplayers darkening their skin for the sake of "cos-accuracy" which the POC community has already expressed how harmful the practice is but people still do it.

Cosplaying with a Mental Disorder
Body Dysmorphic Disorder is described by the Google Dictionary as "a psychological disorder in which a person becomes obsessed with imaginary defects in their appearance." There isn't a lot of discussion about this disorder on the internet when it isn't linked to Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia, but I feel as though it's important to talk about.

Cosplayer Spotlight: The Purple Rainger
Last year, I was searching for cosplay ideas online and ran into a particular cosplay. This cosplayer was dressed in all purple and had a guitar he made like the late Prince. I was curious to know who this person was. For months, I was still unsure of the identity of the cosplayer. Thanks to a person on Facebook, he was identified as Billy Light, also known as The Purple Rainger. I recently had a chance to interview him via Facebook Messenger.

4-Year Cosplay Anniversary
About two and a half weeks ago, I celebrated four years of being a cosplayer. I made my cosplayer debut as Texxx-Man Cosplay on August 1, 2014. A year earlier, one of my friends at work was telling me about a hobby called cosplay. He was preparing to attend a convention, which was a few days away. At first, I didn't know what cosplay was until I searched it online. When I did, I was impressed to see people dressing up as their favorite characters and has inspired me to cosplay. Greta Gremlin: San Diego ComicCon 2018
This year I was lucky enough to be hired for a makeup job at San Diego ComicCon. I was hired by Serena Ruiz to transform her Greta Gremlin from Gremlins 2 on Saturday of ComicCon. In order to complete this daunting task, we started from scratch creating all the prosthetics needed.

I myself am a cosplayer and a seamstress - perfect combination if you ask me. It is such a unique art form, offers an escape from reality, has a strong community, and is excellent for EVERYONE.

Why Cosplay Accuracy Is Overrated
Cosplay is something I've been in love with since 2014, and I don't have any plans of stopping anytime soon. Seeing cosplayers on social media and in person shows me that we're all unique and talented. Whenever you post a picture of your cosplay, you're flooded with likes and fantastic comments. However, with the good comes with the bad. You cosplay as your favorite character and suddenly, someone comes in your comment section on your social media page and says, "You look nothing like your character" or "So and so character is this race. Why are you doing this character?" I can remember someone saying this to me at a convention called the Art Pop Comic Expo in Springdale, Arkansas back in June 2017.
